Come and listen to students, parents, staff, and community leaders as they Read Frederick Douglass Together on Thursday, June 11th! Student readers are Wenezar Bitariho 4, Natania Karori 4, Declan Scarlett 5, Esther Olu 6, Zarah Weah 6, Jonathan Sena-Vasquez 8th grade class president, Franklin Van 8, and former student Linton Scarlett. Our adult readers are Dr. Robert Forrant, Nicholas Leonardos, Ernest Nwachan, George Procope, Tenesha Scarlett, Kim Shanahan, Lura Smith, Tiffany Tran, and Jackie Wangatusi. Light refreshments after the event will be provided by Infuse Afro Fusion of Lowell.

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 6 p.m., in the Luna Theater, LCCPS will host “Reading Frederick Douglass Together at Lowell Community Charter Public School.” In recognition of Juneteenth, this second annual reading of Douglass' speech will feature students and members of the greater Lowell community reading, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Our project scholar, Dr. Robert Forrant, will open the program and lead a discussion after the reading that will engage the audience in considering the speech’s historical and contemporary context and its enduring relevance.
