A STATEMENT FROM LOWELL CITY MANAGER MIKE BURNS.

Due to recent weather over the past few days, the National Weather Service is projecting flooding along the Grand River in the City of Lowell. As of 7:45 AM on April 16, 2026, the National Weather Service reported an observed river level of 11.45 feet in Lowell; flood stage is set at 15.0 feet. The National Weather Service is projecting a crest of 16.4 feet on the Grand River by 2:00 AM on Monday, April 20, 2026, with water levels expected to begin receding at approximately 8:00 PM that evening. This projection is 2.6 feet lower than the water level recorded during the 2013 flood in the City of Lowell. By National Weather Service standards, this would be classified as a minor flood event.

The City of Lowell anticipates that South Jackson Street north of the bridge will be impassable by Saturday, and alternate routes will be recommended for safe travel. We are asking residents who live south of Main Street between South Monroe and South Division to remove any valuables from their basements and main floors. Some businesses along the south side of Main Street may experience water in their parking lots, specifically Huntington Bank and Big Boiler Brewery. In the event any street is closed, the Police Department will cite any violators who are seen driving past barricades.

The City of Lowell, Lowell Area Fire Authority, and Lowell Light and Power are working directly with the Kent County Office of Emergency Management on this event. At this time, the City will not be providing sandbags; however, if projected conditions worsen, locations have been identified and will be shared if sandbag distribution becomes necessary.

The most up-to-date information for residents will be available via the City of Lowell page. We will also provide notifications on our website and to those who receive text messages through the City’s Text MyGov feature.
