PRESS RELEASE:

On October 2, 2026, at approximately 1713 hrs the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding an individual who was reported to be experiencing suicidal ideations. The driver stated he was driving at speeds between 100 and 145 miles per hour while armed with a knife and expressed an intent to kill Police Officers.

In response to the information, Law Enforcement personnel from the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and the Lovelock Police Department coordinated efforts to protect the public by preventing the driver from entering the City of Lovelock. Westbound off-ramps into Lovelock were blocked as a precautionary measure.

As the driver continued traveling at a high rate of speed, Nevada Highway Patrol attempted to deploy stop strips in an effort to safely disable the vehicle and protect other motorists. Before the stop strips could be deployed, the driver exited Interstate 80 at Exit 93.

The driver continued to evade Law Enforcement and drove onto the Toulon Mill property, where he ultimately stopped and initiated a standoff with Law Enforcement Officers. During the standoff, the individual held a knife to his own throat and challenged Officers to shoot him.

The driver subsequently retrieved a box from the trunk of his vehicle which appeared to have contained a gun. Based on the circumstances, Officers believed the driver was attempting to provoke Officers.

As the driver reached for the gun, Officers moved in and deployed a Taser. Officers were able to take the driver into custody without further incident.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office would like to Thank the public for its patience and cooperation during this incident. The coordinated response by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, Lovelock Police Department, and Nevada Highway Patrol helped bring the situation to a safe conclusion without further injury to the public, the driver, or responding officers.

Today The Pershing County Sheriff's Office had the privilege of visiting Lovelock Elementary School to talk with students about safety and the important do’s and don’ts when contacting law enforcement, fire, or EMS here in Lovelock.

It was a great opportunity to help our young community members better understand when and how to reach out for help, what information is most useful to responders, and how we all work together to keep everyone safe.

A big thank you to the Pershing County School District for welcoming us and making this educational visit possible, and to the Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department for joining us and sharing their expertise. Partnerships like these strengthen our community and help prepare the next generation.

We’re proud to serve Lovelock and all of Pershing County. Stay safe!

K9 Veno END OF WATCH 2016–2026

It is with heavy hearts that the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of K9 Veno.

Veno served this agency and the citizens of Pershing County with unwavering dedication from 2018 until 2026. From 2018 through 2026, his exceptional drug detection skills led to the apprehension of numerous offenders and the removal of significant quantities of illegal narcotics from our streets.

In 2020, Veno demonstrated extraordinary courage when he was stabbed while attempting to apprehend a suspect who had resisted arrest, collided with law enforcement vehicles, and fled during a dangerous pursuit while armed with a knife. Despite his injuries, Veno recovered and continued to serve with the same determination and loyalty that defined his career.

Veno’s service protected our community and supported the deputies who worked alongside him. He will be deeply missed by the men and women of the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and by all who knew him.

Rest easy, buddy. Your watch is ended.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

School starts soon, and the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone to prepare for increased traffic around our schools, neighborhoods, and crosswalks.

This includes our school zones and bus stops in the following areas; Lovelock, Rye Patch, Imlay, and Grass Valley.

As students head back to class, remember:

🚸 Slow down in school zones
Watch your speed and be prepared for increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

🚌 Watch for school buses:

Be alert for buses loading and unloading students and always follow Nevada’s school bus stopping laws.

👀 Expect kids to be kids

Children may enter the roadway unexpectedly. Stay off your phone, eliminate distractions, and keep your attention on the road.

🚸 Watch crosswalks

Yield to pedestrians and give students plenty of time and space to cross safely. A few extra seconds can make all the difference.

Give yourself a little extra time and help us make the start of the school year a safe one.

SLOW DOWN ★ STAY ALERT ★ KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office wishes our students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe and successful school year!
