PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT:
As temperatures continue to rise this summer, the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone about the severe dangers of leaving children, vulnerable individuals, or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Even on a mild day, the inside of a car can act like an oven, reaching lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
The Fast Facts on Vehicle Heat:
The Greenhouse Effect: With the vehicle turned off and no AC running, the internal temperature can rise 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes, and nearly 40 degrees within an hour.
Cracking the Windows Doesn't Work: Leaving the windows cracked has been proven to have little to no cooling effect on the inside of a vehicle.
Children are at Higher Risk: A child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s. Heatstroke can begin when the body temperature reaches 104°F, and a core temperature of 107°F can be fatal.
🛑 Practice the "Look Before You Lock" Routine:
Make it a Habit: Always open the back door and check the back seat before walking away from your vehicle. The "Item Reminder" Trick: Place your phone, wallet, employee badge, or left shoe in the back seat. This forces you to check the back before leaving.
Keep Vehicles Locked When Empty: Children can sometimes climb into parked vehicles while playing and become trapped. Keep your fobs and keys out of reach.
📞 See Something, Say Something:
If you are out in the community and see a child or a person in distress inside a hot, unattended vehicle, do not wait. Call 911 immediately.
Minutes matter, and your quick action could save a life. Let's work together to keep Pershing County safe, healthy, and cool this summer! ☀️
