Have you ever heard of “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten”? The concept is simple: read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to read 1,000 books before they reach kindergarten.
Might sound hard, but think of it like this:
- 1 book a day = 365 books in a year!
- In 2 years = 730 books!!
- 3 years = 1,095 books!!!
Considering most children start kindergarten at around 5-years-old, you have more time than you think (but make sure you get started ASAP!)
Here's how to participate:
- Pick up a reading log from Pershing County Library, then check out some books or read your own.
- Keep track of the books that are read with your child(ren). That includes teachers, babysitters, story hours, and YES -- you can even reread books! Like this:
1) Pete the Cat's World Tour
2) Pete the Cat: Super Pete
3) Snow Friends: Our Friend Zuri
4) The Five Nice Mice
5) Peppermint Post
- Every 100 books, bring your log into the library for verification and receive incentives and pictures! Need a new log? You can pick one up at the front desk.
We're really excited to offer this program, and look forward to our kids' brains getting absolutely ginormous on their way to kindergarten!!
