The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of an individual with red clothing and a white beard flying over residential areas in Sherman County. Callers have informed our office that this individual has been landing on houses and carrying a large bag.

A preliminary investigation indicates this individual, identified as Santa Claus, has been conducting lawful activity, and will be continuing to do so throughout the night, without interference from law enforcement.

We have been asked to inform all children in Sherman County that he is requesting they get a good night’s sleep, and that snacks are appreciated (milk and cookies preferred).

The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! We would also like to remind you to buckle up and drive safely in your holiday travels. Deputies will be on patrol tonight, should you need assistance.

PRESS RELEASE

The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded the 2024 Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO) mini-grant. This mini-grant is awarded to law enforcement agencies across the state to purchase speed enforcement equipment. The NDOT-HSO has set a goal to reduce speed-related fatalities on Nebraska roadways by 3% by December 31, 2024, and by 4.4% by December 31, 2026.

This mini-grant, totaling $1,540.74, has been used to purchase a handheld LiDAR speed measuring device. After conducting research into several products, the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office has selected the ProLaser 4, from Kustom Signals, Inc. The rest of the cost of this device will be covered using funds received from the STOP class, totaling $800.00.

Our office took delivery of the device on December 11, 2023, and it will be put into service immediately. It will be used to conduct speed enforcement throughout the county, with a primary focus of enforcement being in school zones in Litchfield and Loup City, NE. This device will also be used to conduct speed studies in targeted areas, to identify areas where speed can be a risk factor for motor vehicle accidents.

As a condition of being a recipient of this grant, the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office will, over the next 3 years, actively participate in selective enforcement mobilizations sponsored by the NDOT-HSO.

The grant application and data compilation were completed by sworn members of the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of Sheriff Jepsen.

The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the NDOT-HSO for being selected as a grant recipient, and for their assistance with the grant application process and purchase of the device.

Attached to this post is the award letter that the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office received from the NDOT-HSO.

It’s that time of year again!

Our hard working farmers are getting ready for another busy harvest season in the fields, so let's do our part and keep an eye out for them as they move their equipment from field to field.

Be safe and stay alert to slow moving implements, wide implements, wide turns, and other hazards associated with harvest season!

09/02/2023

As of September 2, 2023, anyone 21 and older, not already prohibited by law, can carry a concealed handgun without a permit in Nebraska. The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office would like to share these reminders with residents and those visiting or passing through the county:

Safety:

For those who will be exercising their right to concealed carry, safety is of the utmost importance. We encourage you to find and participate in some type of fi****ms safety/training course. Knowing how to safely carry and operate a firearm will greatly reduce the chance of causing an accidental or negligent discharge.

Knowing and understanding the law:

The passage of LB77 made several changes or amendments to various state statutes and local ordinances. Prior to exercising your right to concealed carry, we recommend you visit the Nebraska Legislature website and review Neb. Rev. Stat. §28-1201 to §28-1206. Knowing and understanding the laws will help you avoid any confusion and law violations.

Understand where you are and are not allowed to carry a concealed handgun:

There are locations where carrying a concealed handgun is not allowed. We recommend you visit the Nebraska Legislature website and review Neb. Rev. Stat. §28-1201 to §28-1206. The penalty for carrying a concealed handgun into a prohibited location is Class III Misdemeanor for a first offense, punishable by up to three months in jail and/or a $500 fine. A second offense is a Class I Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $1000 fine.

On April 24, 2023, Deputy Czarnek 9564 and Deputy Trainee Neal 9565 participated in helicopter landing and loading training that was organized by The Loup City Fire and Rescue squad. First Responders from the area worked with AirCare from Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE.

First responders had a classroom training session on being safe around the helicopter and how to set up a landing area so the helicopter can safely land, which was taught by an AirCare flight medic. Then, the AirCare helicopter and crew flew to the airport outside Loup City and first responders worked with the crew and flight medics and did some training on how to load a patient onto the helicopter while the blades are spinning, called a “hot load.”

After that, DT Neal got to go on a short flight with the crew and a member of Loup City Fire and Rescue squad! Deputy Czarnek said that she was unsure if the firefighter or the deputy had a bigger smile when they landed, but we are pretty sure we have never seen DT Neal that excited! DT Neal stated that it was a very fun and “uplifting” experience!

Thank you to Loup City Fire and Rescue, Good Samaritan Hospital, AirCare, and their flight crew for the valuable training and for their service to the community!
