VOTER TIDBITS
You do not have to vote for every race on the ballot – In Kentucky, all you have to do is vote for one person in order for your ballot to be valid.
An absentee ballot has to be in the County Clerk’s office by 6 pm ON Election Day – not postmarked.
As long as a person is 18 years of age, ON or before Election Day, he/she can vote early.
Kentucky law mandates that an employer must give their employees four hours off to vote. This is without pay.
If you die before Election Day, your vote does not count.
Polls open on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 AM and close at 6 PM. If you are in line at 6 PM, you are allowed to vote.
You will need to provide one of these identifications to vote:
U.S. or Kentucky government-issued identification card such as Driver’s license, passport, or any other form of ID containing both picture and signature.
If hard of hearing or vision impaired? Every polling place has the new touch screen voting machines – BUT they are kind of hidden, so ask for them.
NOTE: Provisional Ballots are ONLY for federal races. Provisional ballots are only used for federal offices in federal elections.
If your name is not on voting roster at the polls:
Talk to the onsite Election Supervisor. He/she can call the Election Center if your eligibility to vote is not resolved.
If still not resolved, you will have to go to the Election Center at 1000 East Liberty (cross street is South Wenzel Street) to appeal to the Board of Elections. If successful, the Board will give you an "order" that you have to take back to your precinct to vote.
If that does not resolve the issue, you can appeal to onsite the Circuit Court Judge, who can overrule the Board. The judge will give you a Court Order that you will have to take back to your precinct in order to vote.
AND all of this must be done before 6 PM
Emergency Medical Ballots:
If you become sick or are in the hospital, you can request a paper absentee ballot until Tuesday, May 21.
Call Jefferson County Board of Election office (502.574.6100) to get an Emergency Medical Ballot.
Someone will need to notarize your application for a ballot, then someone needs take that application to the Board of Elections to get your ballot; then after you fill out your ballot, a person has to take your ballot back to the Board of Elections before 6 PM on Primary Election Day (May 21)!
