The SAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic non-profit, United States 501(c)3, corporation that seeks to maintain and extend

* the institutions of American freedom
* an appreciation for true patriotism
* a respect for our national symbols
* the value of American citizenship
* the unifying force of e pluribus unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people

. We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions. This means that each member has traced his family tree back to a point of having an ancestor who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783.

🌳 The Connecticut Society SAR recently dedicated its 18th Liberty Tree at the Jabez Smith House in Groton, honoring Revolutionary War Patriot and Continental Marine Lt. Jabez Smith Jr. The event also featured a Revolutionary War encampment and public education activities as part of an SAR America 250 celebration.

On June 13 in Charlestown, Indiana, a grave marking ceremony and historical marker unveiling was held for one of the original trustees of the city of Louisville and Revolutionary War Patriot, George Slaughter.

A native of Virginia, George Slaughter was part of the 8th Virginia Regiment and was at Valley Forge. In 1780, Slaughter joined George Rogers Clark’s forces at the Falls of the Ohio. Major George Slaughter participated in the Battle of Piqua (1780) and managed the construction of Fort Nelson—a fort once located one block from SAR headquarters.

Two Years in the making: On 30 August 2023, Stuart Martin and Allen Manning met with Treva Hodges, Mayor, City of Charlestown, Indiana, and her Parks Staff to discuss placing a memorial stone and SAR Emblem to conduct at Grave Marking.

The headstone was approved and delivered to the city in May 2026 and the Indiana Historical marker delivered to the city in April 2026. The city of Charlestown installed the Historical Marker and Allen Manning installed the VA headstone as well as a red granite stone with a SAR bronze lug emblem, a DAR emblem and a Descendants of Valley Forge emblem to honor his service.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the SAR was pleased to welcome approximately 50 members of the Southern Dames of America during their Louisville conference visit.

Guests received a behind-the-scenes tour of the construction progress on the upcoming SAR Museum led by Interim Museum Director Joe Alexander, along with a stop at the SAR Genealogical Research Library. The group also enjoyed a presentation from our Education and Collections Manager highlighting SAR’s mission and collections.

We’re grateful they made SAR one of their Louisville stops and enjoyed sharing a look at what’s ahead for the museum and our educational programs!

Thanks to everyone who joined us at SAR Headquarters for our Flag Day celebration!
