Fall is a great time to begin switching to a groundcover that does not need to be mowed as frequently.

With fall's cooler weather and rain, groundcover seeds are able to establish good roots and outcompete traditional grass and other unwanted w**ds. Fallen leaves also provide good nutrients for the soil and can protect the emerging seedlings.

What even are w**ds?

Weeds are different things to different people. Generally, a w**d is a plant that is growing where it is not wanted. Some w**ds can cause health issues like allergies. Some w**ds can be invasive, and some are noxious. Noxious w**ds are designated by a government body as one that can cause injury to agriculture, wildlife, or public health.

Before you remove any plants you believe are w**ds, do some research about what they are. They could have benefits you didn't expect!

An easy way to lower your air quality impact on air quality alert days is to not use gas lawn equipment. Mowing with a gas mower or using other gas-powered equipment is very polluting. The Air Pollution Control District sends out air quality alerts on days that are unhealthy for sensitive groups. Reducing your contribution to air quality on those days is important. It is a free pass to not do work outside on those days!

Diverse landscaping for a lawn can offer more benefits than a traditional grass lawn. Turf grass roots are shallow; under the most ideal conditions they can grow to 6-12 inches. However, this is uncommon. Usually they grow about 1-2 inches. Some native plants can have root lengths up to 15 feet.

Roots offer water storage. Having plants with longer roots increases the amount of water absorbed. This means they do not need to be watered as often and can prevent flooding. This is useful in a lawn and wherever you notice a lot of water runoff from storms.

Roots also provide stability to plants and soil. If you find that you have a sloping lawn, deep rooting plants will be better for holding itself and the surrounding soil in place.

🌳 FREE STORM DEBRIS DROP-OFF THIS SATURDAY

Jefferson County residents can drop off tree debris for free on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at four Louisville Metro locations:

📍 Shawnee Park, 4501 W. Broadway
📍 Meriwether Lot, 535 Meriwether Ave.
📍 Public Works Yard, 595 N. Hubbards Ln.
📍 Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Rd. (Enter from Bethany Lane.)

Tree debris only. Residents only. Residents will be asked to provide their ZIP code.

Contractors and businesses hauling debris may use the Waste Reduction Center for the usual fee. Visit Louisvilleky.gov/WRC for details.

Getting rid of your grass is often the biggest barrier when it comes to creating a low-mow lawn. Here are a few ways to go about removing grass that might be easier than using a shovel and wheelbarrow!

You can use cardboard and mulch! Lay down a layer of cardboard and cover with mulch. This will kill the grass over time and you should be able to plant into the decaying mulch while cutting through the cardboard.

You can also use tarps! A dark tarp will starve the grass of moisture and light and kill the grass over months. A clear plastic tarp may magnify the sun's rays to kill the grass.

You can also use herbicides. This is an effective and easy way to kill grass and other w**ds quickly. However, you will have to remove the dead plants in order to begin planting natives. Herbicides may also have adverse effects on the environment not just in your yard. Do proper research before you use this method.
