This month we celebrate the deaf and hard-of-hearing community by honoring deaf history and culture, supporting sign language rights, and promoting accessibility for all. Did you know? Behind English and Spanish, ASL (American Sign Language) is the 3rd most commonly used language in the U.S. International Day of Sign Languages. Celebrated every year on September 23rd , the International Day of Sign Languages exists to protect and support the linguistic identity and culture of deaf people and all other sign language users. Did you know? ASL is not universal, although it’s one of the most common sign languages in the world. There are more than 300 sign languages worldwide! Image 3- National Service Dog Month. Observed every September to raise awareness and celebrate the live-changing work of service dogs on people with disabilities. Service dogs provide their partners with greater independence by performing tasks like picking up dropped items, alerting to sounds and blood sugar levels, and softening symptoms of PTSD, and more. Did you know? Service dogs begin their training as puppies. National Nonspeaking Awareness Day. Celebrated on September 30th , this day is dedicated to promote awareness and understanding about individuals who don’t speak verbally. Common examples of communication include AAC devices, visuals and boards, nonverbal cues, and sign language. Did you know? The first non-electric AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device was created in 1920.)
