Kentucky Senior Medicare Patrol Prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud! louisvilleky.gov/SMP
This page is supported by ACL Grant .

SMP visits seniors wherever they gather, at senior centers, housing complexes, churches, and health fairs and talk about what they can do to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud. SMP trains Medicare beneficiaries how to protect personal information, identify errors on healthcare statements, recognize scams (like illegal marketing, providing unnecessary services, and charging for services that were not provided) and how to report medical fraud and abuse. This account is managed by the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. For more info go to www.louisvilleky.gov/health.

You don't have a "Medicare file" that needs updating. If you get a call saying your Medicare file needs to be updated, hang up. Medicare isn’t asking for this; it’s a scam. If you did confirm or give out your Medicare number, report it to the SMP.

Beneficiaries: be on the lookout for plastic Medicare cards being sent in the mail! These are not official Medicare cards – they are from scammers. Lately, scammers have been mailing out fake cards with instructions to call a number to “activate” it. Calling the number puts you on the phone with someone whose only job is to ask for your personal, healthcare, and financial information. If you receive one of these cards in the mail, report it to the SMP or 1-800-Medicare!

Our Fraud Fighter of the Month for August is MARY! We have been lucky enough for Mary to have dedicated nearly a quarter-century to serving her community through the SMP program. Throughout her tenure with SMP, Mary has taken on numerous leadership roles. During open enrollment periods, she delivered educational presentations. She also anchored community outreach events, including the "Drug Toss" prescription safety initiative held in partnership with local organizations.

Today, Mary continues to support the mission through essential administrative work, such as assembling event giveaway bags and labeling outreach materials with SMP contact information. When asked about volunteering with SMP, Mary stated, “Volunteering with SMP has been a joy in my life for many years now. I have loved the supervisors I have worked with. This has been very rewarding and I have been able to help other people.” Our director Michelle List said,

"The KY SMP program is incredibly fortunate that Mary continues to volunteer and share her 90 years of wisdom with us.”
