My heart is heavy this evening for our community. It’s taken me the entire day to wrap my mind around this incident.
Overnight, two women were shot and killed near the University of Louisville's Belknap campus, at the Family Scholar House — a place built to support student-parents working to build a better future for their families. Neither woman was a UofL student or employee. Their lives were cut short, and two families are waking up today to an unimaginable loss.
I'm thinking of the neighbors who sheltered in place, the students and staff processing this tragedy, and especially the residents of Family Scholar House — many of whom have already overcome so much to be there. No one should have to carry more fear on top of what they've already survived.
LMPD has not yet identified a suspect, and I trust they will pursue this investigation with the urgency it demands. I'll be watching closely and will support our law enforcement and community partners in any way my office can.
To my neighbors in the 42nd House District: please look out for one another in the days ahead. And to the families of the victims — you are in my prayers, and this community grieves with you.
