🕵️Decoding Leftist Lingo:

Proletariat: The class of wage workers who derive their income from the sale of their labor. 🧑‍🔧

Bourgeoisie: The economic ruling class who owns the means of production and controls the means of coercion. 🤵

🌎Origins:

Swiss liberal economist and historian Jean Charles Léonard de Sismondi was the first to apply the term proletariat to the working class created under capitalism, and whose writings were frequently cited by Karl Marx.

The bourgeoisie originally emerged in the late Middle Ages as a “middle class” between peasantry and aristocracy. The Industrial Revolution amplified the expansion of this social class, leading to a new form of economic disparity between workers and capital owners.

🛑Stop thinking about social class in relation to your income or personal property.

💭Start thinking about social class in relation to the means of production.

[alt text:] 📖Books to Know:

The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein describes how the American government systematically imposed residential segregation with the use of flawed urban planning, racial zoning laws, and support. Of violent resistance to African Americans in white neighborhoods.

🏙️In Louisville:

“By failing to recognize that we live with severe, enduring effects of de jure segregation, we avoid confronting our constitutional obligation to reverse it.”

On November 5, 1917, in the case of Buchanan v. Warley, the Supreme Court declared segregated housing to be unconstitutional. In an unanimous decision, the Court determined that a Louisville, Kentucky city ordinance limiting Black people from living in majority-white areas was in violation of the 14th Amendment and an infringement on individual property rights. Looking back years later, W. E. B. Du Bois declared the decision to have broken “the backbone of segregation.” -Zinn EducationProject

📚Why You Should Read:

It is important to acknowledge the segeration in our system and laws that have unjustly divided our communities. Louisville is just one of many cities across the country whose history has been tainted by segregation. Learning this history helps us become better prepared to dismantle these barriers.

On March 21st, the Nuestra América brigade is going on a mission to deliver aid to the Cuban people and to fight back against the aggressive and internationally-deplored U.S. policies against the island. Our Cuban-American CPUSA comrade, Justine Medina, will be traveling on this convoy with a group of other Cuban-American activists in CAFC (Cuban Americans for Cuba).

Donations here will go to cover travel to Miami and expenses for days Justine will have to miss work. Any and all extra funds will be directed towards immediate aid for the Cuban people.
