When the crucial vote for independence was held on July 2, 1776, none of the delegates from New York voted for it. Because they did not have clear authority from the colonial government, they abstained and the measure passed 12-0, without New York voting. Instructions finally arrived on July 9, allowing the delegates to support American independence. When the final copy of the Declaration on Independence was produced in August, four men from New York signed it.

Philip Livingston was a wealthy merchant who actively opposed British taxation and died only two years after signing the Declaration. Shortly after William Floyd signed the Declaration, the British occupied his New York farm. Floyd rose to the rank of general in the New York State militia during the Revolutionary War and was elected to the first U.S. Congress in 1789. Francis Lewis was a merchant and served in the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1779. His home was destroyed by the British in August 1776 and his wife taken prisoner. Lewis Morris inherited a massive estate – which was also destroyed by the British during the war – and was connected to many important families in several colonies. Joining the cause of independence, he was warned by his brother - a general in the British army - not to sign the Declaration, but Morris reportedly responded, "Damn the consequences. Give me the pen."

See the signatures of these New Yorkers – and the 52 other signers – at the Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence in Constitution Gardens.

Honored to join family, friends, elected officials & community members in celebrating the life & legacy of the late Col. John E. Aubrey, longtime Jefferson County Sheriff & a dear friend. Louisville’s designation of “Col. John E. Aubrey Way” at 6th and Jefferson is a fitting tribute to a man whose decades of service helped shape & strengthen our community.
He devoted more than 55 years to public service and became a respected leader not only in Louisville, but across Kentucky & the nation. His unwavering commitment to public safety, professionalism & service to others earned him the admiration of colleagues & citizens alike. I’m grateful to have known him & proud to help honor a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. National Sheriffs' Association
