Spread the word!!

📢 Metro Government has released a formal solicitation of interest to identify organizations interested in using the Shelby Park Community Center for programming that benefits the community. The full solicitation and opportunity to respond can be found on the city’s procurement portal, Bonfire, at https://louisvilleky.bonfirehub.com/opportunities/188676.

There is a pre-solicitation meeting interested organizations are invited to attend on Friday June 13th at 1pm at the community center, 600 E Oak St.

Eagerly watching our perimeter bed grow for community harvest!! And on that note— by harvest we mean ~waiting to pick what’s ripe~~ we’ve had some people take whole plants, roots and all, from the perimeter bed. Please keep our plants in the ground so we can take care of them. That way everyone can share the wealth 🙂‍↔️

Over the last year, we have been working closely with Louisville Grows on a grant they won on our behalf from Tito's Handmade Vodka! The panning of this garden redesign has been an incredible experience and we are so grateful for the opportunity.

Through this grant, we’ve been able to build a new 130 foot-long planting strip around the garden for community harvesting. This perimeter bed provides 441 square feet of growing space for the community— nearly triple what we had before!

Inside, we expanded from 25 beds to 35 beds. And we are completely booked out for the 2025 season! Nearly all our gardeners are residents of the Shelby Park or surrounding neighborhoods. Thank you Kentuckiana Backyard Farms for leading all the bed building!

We also are working on finishing our a pavilion to host community events. Thank you Matt Robertson with Clover Systems for helping with this construction!

This has been a once in a million, true community collaboration and we’ve met so many people during this process. Thank you FOKO Breakfast, Brunch y Lunch and shaharcafe for proving our food for the build day! And big thank you to Fresh Start Growers Supply for helping plan and supply all the wood and materials!

Thank you so much again Louisville Grows and Tito's and to the many friends, family and neighbors who have been a part of this. We are so grateful!

Here's how I plant and tend garlic in Kentucky- zone 7A

The garlic plant and where to buy “seed” garlic Choose a garlic bulb and hold it–don’t pull anything off–feel it, get to know the garlic. Find the different parts of the plant on the specimen you have in your hand.

My circumstances are changing. It was not possible to build two new raised cedar beds in the Monticello garden to plant my garlic seed for the 2025 crop. And the Shelby Park Community Garden (SPCG) in Louisville, KY where I plant my garlic will be reconfiguring their planting beds in the spring 2025

Our 🧄 expert Deb Lynn showed us how to braid garlic at the garden a couple weekends ago! We started at 7am, as dawn is the best time of the day to braid garlic. We learned a lot and hope to do it again next summer! You can learn more about Deb’s work of art at www.lynncarnefix.com 💞
