Hay Season Is Here – Don’t Let a Good Day in the Field Turn Into a Bad One

It’s that time of year again when hay balers are putting in overtime across Winston County and beyond. With long days, hot temperatures, dry conditions, and equipment running nonstop, the risk of hay baler fires increases significantly.

We recently responded to our first hay baler fire of the season, and unfortunately, it likely won’t be the last.

Before heading to the field, take a few minutes to:
✅ Check wheel, roller, and spindle bearings for excessive heat or wear
✅ Remove accumulated hay, dust, and debris from the baler
✅ Inspect belts, chains, and moving parts
✅ Follow all manufacturer-recommended service and maintenance schedules
✅ Keep a fire extinguisher readily accessible on your tractor or baler
✅ Periodically stop and check equipment temperatures during operation

A few minutes of preventive maintenance can save thousands of dollars in equipment damage and help prevent a field fire from spreading.

Please help us spread the word and stay safe this hay season. If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

🚒 Hydrant Testing in Progress – Vance Street / Mt. Moriah Area 🚒

Today, A-Shift with the Louisville Fire Department will be out flowing, testing, and cleaning around fire hydrants in the areas of Vance Street, Warner Street, Cagle Street, and Mt. Moriah.

⚠️ What to Expect:

• Increased fire department activity in these areas
• Possible temporary traffic delays — please slow down, use caution, and watch for personnel working near the roadway
• Temporary discoloration of water (brown tint) caused by sediment being stirred up in the water lines

We know nobody enjoys turning on the faucet and getting “Louisville sweet tea” straight from the tap, but this testing is an important part of making sure our hydrants operate properly when emergencies happen. These inspections also help us identify hydrants that may need repairs or maintenance before they become a problem.

💧 If your water becomes discolored:

• Run cold water for a short period of time
• The water should clear fairly quickly as the lines flush out

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we continue working to keep our hydrant system reliable and our community protected.
