Great to continue to work with this fantastic team in St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay.

On Fridays, we will begin highlighting a work team project and its progress! Please message us if you want your work team project featured in the future.

This week, we are highlighting the Waste No Food Tampa Bay Initiative from the Food Recovery Work Team! In a nutshell, this app connects food donors with local charities so that excess food can be donated instead of sent to the landfill. The work team is working hard to grow this initiative (which started in San Francisco) in the Tampa Bay area!

We currently have over 30 donors and charities signed up, including St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Straz Center for the Performing Arts! We are excited about the potential partnerships that can be formed moving forward. Just last week, we had a fantastic donation of four turkeys from Smokin' J's BBQ to CASA St. Petersburg!

The work team is focusing on making donations more frequent by connecting donors and charities that are relatively close to each other. It's a great step towards recognizing that what we throw away every day has real value, as well as the power to help people! If you are interested in getting involved with this initiative, whether as a donor, charity, or volunteer, please reach out to [email protected] or [email protected]!

A new app is allowing restaurant, hotels and caterers to donate leftover food to local food banks and shelters.

We've highlighted some of the Bay Area groups working to ensure that everyone has access to healthy food--what other food justice organizations should we know about?

Did you know that San Francisco is home to 8,000 homeless people...and that nearly 70 percent of homeless don't even eat on a daily basis? Yep, it's no secret that SF carries the hugely unflattering title of America's second largest homeless population, and not a day goes by without someone begging…

Waste No Food, along with our partner the Tampa Bay Network to End Hunger, is thrilled to announce the beginning of our program in Central Florida. Thank you to Sweetwater Organic Community Farm for your donation.

Meals On Wheels of Tampa is so proud to share with you that we recovered our first batch of food today from Sweetwater Organic Community Farm through the Waste No Food Tampa Bay, a Tampa Bay Network to End Hunger web/smartphone application! This afternoon, the farm posted hundreds of pounds of produce for pick-up that came from their final harvest of the season. Today’s recovered produce included red and purple carrots, fennel, peppers, eggplant and cabbage. Chef Tony at Meals On Wheels is so excited to get cooking with this beautiful produce- and the carrots will be included in next Saturday’s POW (Produce On Wheels) bag! Thank you all for making this possible!

Waste No Food Tampa Bay links leftover food (from restaurants, growers, etc.) directly to non-profit’s with feeding programs. If you know of any restaurants in the tri-county area that you think would be interested, please visit http://wastenofood.org/how-it-works for more information.

Thank you to Assemblymembers Low and Gordon for the recognition and for all of your support in our mission to eradicate hunger in the Bay Area.

Today, Assemblymember Rich Gordon and I had the pleasure of hosting a young leader from Silicon Valley, Kiran Sridhar. When he was just 12 years old, he started Waste No Food, a program that connects local charities with restaurants who have extra food to give through a free mobile app. Congratulations Kiran and thank you for all you have done and will continue to do to end hunger and food waste in Silicon Valley.
