Castle Rock State Park

Castle Rock State Park Castle Rock State Park is a land of sculpted sandstone, lush forests, and sweeping vistas. Enjoy hiking, backpacking, horse back and rock climbing.

From one of the highest ridges in the Santa Cruz Mountains, park visitors enjoy hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. Rock climbers explore the park's caverns and rocks, including the namesake Castle Rock. Plant-lovers come for California black oaks, knobcone pines, and high-elevation coast redwoods. The parkโ€™s 34 miles of rugged trails conveniently connect to an extensive trail system that l

inks the Santa Clara and San Lorenzo valleys to nearby Big Basin Redwoods State Park and open space preserves on the Skyline to the Sea Trail.

If you see the ground moving do not be afraid! It's only Thatch Ants. These small but mighty ants are super active when it is sunny and warm. Their name derives from the way they make their mounds. If you get closer (which we do not recommend because they do bite) they are creating large mounds which appear to be "thatched" as they have materials layered on top like traditional European thatched roofs. Their mounds can be up to 8 feet tall, by 2 ยฝ to 3 inches across, and 5 feet deep. These colonies can contain up to tens of thousands of ants within one mound. Happy Hiking and remember to look out on the trail in case you get some โ€œants in your pantsโ€!

If you guessed Giant Trillium, you were right! Come hike around Castle Rock State Park and see these beauties in bloom. It takes 7 to 8 years for a trillium to flower. So if you plant them in your garden, be patient.

Come join us at Castle Rock State Park for Earth Day!

Whether you are here for a guided hike, a self guided hike, here to climb, or just looking for a fun activity to do, come to Castle Rock State Park for our DIY seed pod activity!

If you donโ€™t mind getting your hands a little dirty, come join us in making your own seed balls. You can help all the awesome native pollinators, like butterflies and bees, by creating a seed pod with some of our local native wildflowers. We will have three-seed mixes, there will be California Bluebells (phacelia campanularia), the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) and some lovely lupines (Lupinus constancei). You donโ€™t need a yard to help out the pollinators, you can put these in a pot with some soil on a balcony or any outside space big or small. We will have all the materials and help guide you in making your own seed pod. All you have to do is show up!

Address: 15451 Skyline Blvd Los Gatos, CA 95033
