On May 16, Consul General Kosei Murota was honored to attend Zipangu, one of the biggest overseas J-pop festivals ever, and celebrate the energy, creativity, and global power of Japanese music alongside passionate fans in Los Angeles. 🎌🎶

From the electrifying performances to the incredible fan energy, Zipangu showed just how far Japanese music and culture continue to reach. 😍

We had a chance to take a picture with Atarashii Gakko after their exciting performance! ✨

The pre-event also brought together music and entertainment leaders from Japan and the U.S., including the visionaries who made it possible to bring to LA a golden lineup of talented artists beyond label and agency boundaries. 🎤

We are truly grateful to witness what feels like a historic turning point for Japanese music overseas, and we look forward to continuing to support the growth of Japan’s music scene in Los Angeles and beyond. 🥰

Big shout out to all the amazing artists! 🙌

On May 20, Consul General Kosei Murota visited the Port of Long Beach and met with CEO Noel Hacegaba to discuss areas for further economic collaboration and ways to strengthen the ties between Japan and the Port of Long Beach.

The Port of Long Beach serves as a vital gateway to and from Asia, with over 90% of its cargo coming from the region. Japan stands as the Port's fourth largest trading partner, and numerous Japanese companies are actively contributing to the Port's operations, particularly in the field of hydrogen technologies.

During the meeting, discussions ranged from national security and supply chain resilience to a more personal note — CEO Hacegaba's Japanese heritage. We were delighted to learn that part of his family roots trace back to Okinawa! We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to flourish!

Thank you again to the Port of Long Beach for hosting us!

The Japanese American National War Memorial Court at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC in Little Tokyo bears the names of over 1,200 fallen Japanese American veterans.

On May 23 (Saturday), Consul General Kosei Murota attended the Japanese American Veterans Joint Memorial Service and offered a flower at the Memorial Court.

At the ceremony, Deputy Secretary Mayumi Kimura for Women Veterans Affairs at the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) gave a deeply moving keynote speech. A U.S. Navy veteran born in San Jose, she now represents and serves the 155,000 women veterans in California. She shared that despite being Shin-Nisei (“new second generation”) without any Japanese American veterans in her family, she nevertheless feels a strong connection with them through her current work.

The ceremony provided a meaningful opportunity to remember the importance of preserving the history, sacrifices, and legacy of past generations, and of continuing to pass those stories on to the future.

On May 22, Consul General Kosei Murota met with UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk to discuss ways to strengthen ties between Japan and Southern California through academic exchanges between UCLA and Japanese universities, as well as cooperation leading up to LA28 for Japanese athletes. 👨‍🎓🏫

In March, Chancellor Frenk visited Tokyo to attend the 50th anniversary ceremony of the UCLA Japan Alumni Association.

The UCLA Terasaki Center for Japan Studies vitally contributes to the connection between Japan and UCLA through its work enhancing Japanese studies, training a new generation of Japan scholars, and presenting Japan-related events inside and outside UCLA.

Phoenix and Himeji are celebrating 50 years of sister city friendship!

Consul General Kosei Murota joined the reception alongside the mayors and representatives from both cities and marked the memorable occasion with a traditional sake barrel breaking ceremony 🇺🇸🤝🇯🇵

The cities build ties through:
🌿 Sister garden exchanges
🏫 An English assistant teacher program in Himeji
👭 A Youth Ambassador Program
🏭 Business exchange, industry connections, tourism

Fun fact: A memorable symbol of this friendship is a cactus growing at Himeji City’s Tegara-yama Botanical Garden, gifted by the City of Phoenix in 1979! It recently bloomed twice, bringing great joy to Himeji’s mayor and local residents🌵✨

Here’s to the next 50 years of friendship between Phoenix and Himeji!

On May 23, , a Japanese rice ball restaurant, opened its first U.S. location at The Enclave in Torrance🍙🎊

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by USA Chairman Muneo Nishida, Torrance Mayor George Chen, offices of California state elected officials, city council members, Consul Shunichiro Kitagawa from our consulate, and many members of the community. In his remarks, Chairman Nishida expressed his gratitude to all their supporters in opening the store and hoped that OMUSUBI will become a part of the community’s daily life.

In celebration of the grand opening, the gallery next to the store featured illustrations telling the story of “omusubi” (Japanese rice ball), as well as a mural by artist OG Slick featuring omusubi-themed characters.

In addition to Japanese rice balls, OMUSUBI offers a variety of drinks and side items, such as matcha lattes and edamame. You can enjoy the food and drinks in the spacious eating area located within The Enclave.

Congratulations to OMUSUBI and looking forward to seeing Japanese food and culture becoming even more popular here! Let’s enjoy Japanese “omusubi” !
