Dear Los Angeles Unified Community,
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the entire Los Angeles region through Monday, Sept. 9. To continue to ensure the safety of our students, employees and school communities during this heatwave, Los Angeles Unified has implemented several precautionary measures:
Modified schedules for recess, nutrition, and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure.
Adjusted physical activities in P.E. classes and Beyond the Bell after school programs.
Rescheduled or modified high school athletic events and outdoor clubs.
Ensured air-conditioned systems are fully operational, with portable air conditioning units ready for deployment if necessary.
Relocation of students to cooler spaces if air conditioning fails in classrooms.
Closed doors and windows in air-conditioned rooms to maintain cool temperatures.
Frequent water breaks and reminders for students and employees to stay hydrated.
Monitoring and adjusting physical activities based on student well-being.
Limited use of hot surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and artificial turf to cooler early hours.
To support these efforts, please consider the following:
Wear breathable, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
Apply sunscreen and wear hats to protect from sun exposure during outdoor activities.
Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water and bring appropriate snacks. Please note that water containers should not be shared, and food and drinks are not allowed on District buses.
Inform your school if your child has any heat-sensitive health conditions.
Report symptoms of heat-related illness (e.g., fatigue, dehydration, muscle cramps) to a coach or teacher immediately.
We extend our gratitude to all Los Angeles Unified employees who work tirelessly to keep our schools cool and safe every day. For more information on preventing heat stress, please visit www.lausd.org/oehs, or by following us on social media .
Sincerely,
Alberto M. Carvalho
Superintendent
