We’re grateful to The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation for a recent $50,000 grant supporting VCH’s resident services.

A safe, affordable home is often where the next chapter begins. Through personalized support, our resident services team helps people pursue goals, strengthen community connections, navigate challenges, and build the futures they envision for themselves.

For nearly 30 years, The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation has been a steadfast partner in this work, providing flexible funding that helps VCH respond to emerging needs and invest in the wellbeing of our residents and communities.

Thank you to The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, for helping create the conditions in which people can not only remain housed, but truly thrive.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🎉 Celebrating 10 years of Lupe at VCH!

A decade ago, Lupe was a graduate of our Venice YouthBuild program, which helped her explore career paths, build her skills, and envision new possibilities for her future. Today, she’s a valued member of our property management team, and we’re so grateful to have her as part of the VCH community.

Reflecting on her 10 years with VCH, Lupe shared:

“A decade of my life well spent. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to continue to grow within the organization. I’d do it all over again!!”

We’re so glad you did, Lupe! Thank you for 10 years of growth, dedication, and being part of what makes VCH special. 🫶

When Coral talks about her future, she talks about children. She dreams of becoming an elementary school teacher. One day, she hopes to open a childcare center where kids can play outside, grow gardens, and simply be kids.

That dream comes from experience. After a childhood marked by instability, neglect, and abuse, Coral experienced homelessness at 16. Even then, she found herself caring for and supporting other people around her.

With support from Safe Place for Youth and Venice Community Housing, Coral continued her education, eventually earning her high school diploma through Westside Youth Academy. Housing gave her the stability to focus on school, work, and the future she wanted to build.

Today, Coral lives at Rose Apartments, works with children through a local school and a youth-centered nonprofit, and is pursuing her college education. She also advocates for young people experiencing homelessness, volunteers in her community, and shares her story to help others understand what can become possible when young people have the support and stability they need.

Thank you, Coral, for speaking at this year’s Jazz Brunch. We’re so grateful you trusted us with your story and gave our community the chance to hear it in your own words.

Read Coral’s story and learn more about her journey on our website: vchcorp.org/blog.

A big thank you to Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, and Governor Gavin Newsom for their leadership on AB 2051, which was signed into law this week.

The bill includes a provision that affects the Venice Dell Community, our planned 100% affordable housing project at 200 N. Venice Blvd. The provision allows the Coastal Commission, for good cause, to retroactively extend certain approval timelines for affordable housing developments.

For Venice Dell, this means we can avoid having to go through the Coastal Commission approval process again, preventing one more delay for this much-needed project and the 120 affordable homes it will bring to the Westside.

We’re grateful to Assemblymember Wicks for authoring AB 2051, Assemblymember McKinnor for championing the legislation as a coauthor, and Governor Newsom for signing it into law. Thank you for your commitment to moving Venice Dell forward.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who continues to believe in VCH and our work to ensure that everyone has a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. We couldn’t do it without you!

As we get closer to our 34th Annual Jazz Brunch, we’re getting to know this year’s Courage in Action Award honorees, Dana and Eric Newman, a little better. 💙

Dana’s connection to VCH began in 2009, when she volunteered at our Westminster Transitional Living Community, leading arts and crafts with the children while their mothers attended parenting classes. Through that experience, she got to see firsthand how a safe, stable home can give families the foundation they need to move forward. What began with volunteering grew into fundraising, community advocacy, and eventually service on VCH’s Board of Directors, including as Treasurer. Dana and Eric have continued to grow their support for VCH over the years, bringing their generosity, connections, and shared belief in housing justice to the work.

We’re so grateful for the many ways Dana and Eric have shown up for VCH over the years, and we can’t wait to celebrate them at Jazz Brunch on September 27. 🎷
