Meet Darren Melamed, Owner of Pizza World

Originally opened in 1978 under the name Kosher Nostra, it was the first kosher pizza shop in Los Angeles. Darren Melamed began as an employee and took over the business in 1991, rebranding it as Pizza World. In recent years, his daughter has joined the team with plans to eventually take over the family business.

Pizza World offers a diverse menu that includes pizza, dairy-free Mexican dishes, Italian specialties, sandwiches, and soups. Open for both lunch and dinner most days of the week, the restaurant provides table service, takeout, and delivery, making it a convenient and family-friendly dining option.

Pizza World primarily serves the surrounding Jewish community and upholds the highest standards of kosher observance in all aspects of food preparation and service. Every item on the menu is Chalav Yisroel and Pas Yisroel, and the kitchen is maintained in strict accordance with halachic requirements. The restaurant also proudly accommodates dietary restrictions including dairy- and gluten-free options.

Meet David and Stacey Cooperman, Owner of SHALOM HOUSE FINE JUDAICA

Larry and Bernice Cooperman felt there was a need for a Judaica store in the west San Fernando Valley, so they opened Shalom House Fine Judaica in 1971.They sold items for Jewish life cycle such as bris, baby naming, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, funerals, Shabbat and Jewish Holidays.

Their son, David Cooperman, and his brother worked in the store growing up and eventually David and his wife Stacey took over the store in 1992. Today they still run the family business along with the help of their 5 daughters, carrying on the tradition that Bernice and Larry put into place.

Shalom House Fine Judaica is well known for offering an extensive range of Judaica products from Israel and Around the World to the Los Angeles community. They focus on hand-crafted items rather than mass-produced ones. These unique, high-quality items often become family heirlooms, treasured for generations.

Meet Kenji Suzuki, Owner of Suehiro Cafe Little Tokyo

Sisters Junko and Yuriko opened Suehiro Cafe in 1972 in Little Tokyo. They slowly turned strangers into loyal customers and friends into regulars. Today, the family legacy continues under Junko’s son Kenji and his wife Tomoko, carrying forward a tradition of warmth, care, and authentic Japanese comfort food that has stood the test of time.

In 2024, Suehiro Cafe lost its flagship location in Little Tokyo, but it is still woven into the history of Little Tokyo itself. With its new location in the Historic Core, Suehiro continues to honor its past while serving as a gathering place for the neighborhood keeping traditions alive one meal at a time.

Suehiro Cafe is known for serving traditional Japanese meals that nourish both body and culture. From donburis (rice bowls) and teishoku (set meals) to seasonal specialties like ozoni and yakitori grilled over traditional Japanese charcoal, the menu bridges generations and cultures. It gives longtime residents a taste of home while introducing new visitors to japanese dishes beyond the usual sushi and ramen options.
