We are devastated, stunned and distraught. We lost our beloved “Ted.” Tuskegee Airman Lt Col Theodore "Ted" George Lumpkin, Jr., passed away December 26th just four days short of his 101st birthday. He surrendered to COVID-19 after a short battle. If anyone could beat COVID-19, we thought Ted could. He had been so victorious in other things; this would be one more thing added to his legacy. Shortly before his passing, he was scheduled to celebrate his 101st birthday with us. Unfortunately, Ted was unable to attend due to his diagnosis and we would soon learn of our great loss.
Ted was admired in so many ways, including an amazing 72-year long marriage to Georgia, making her his mate, September 10, 1948. He was devoted to the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation, where he served as board member, advisor and mentor. He led by example.
Always pursuing excellence, Ted had a stellar military career serving as an air combat intelligence officer attached to the 332nd Fighter Group. As a civilian, he worked 32 years with Los Angeles County government and subsequently owned a real estate business. Education was a priority, earning an associate of arts degree in mathematics from, Los Angeles Community College, as well as an undergraduate and master’s degree from University of Southern California (USC).
When Ted talked, people listened, because what one was about to hear were words of wisdom. Known to have had a great sense of humor too, he was forthright and often shared his insightful opinion.
An inspiration to young and old alike, he was rightfully proud of his service to America’s military and the heroic impact made by celebrated Tuskegee Airmen.
He had exceptional character and a concerned heart. Aside from his exemplary biography, he was just a rock-solid person, someone most would be grateful to know. Like so many , that preceded him in death, Ted’s long life, commitment to causes, and his welcoming personality made him a true champion and a giant amount many.
