A Win for Student Financial Aid! πŸŽ“

On April 14, AB 2251 passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee with unanimous support. This bill would require colleges to be more transparent about how they calculate Cost of Attendance budgets and clearly communicate when students can request adjustments based on their actual expenses.

For foster youth and students navigating college without a traditional safety net, this transparency can make a meaningful difference in accessing the full financial aid they are eligible for.

United Friends of the Children proudly submitted a letter in support of AB 2251, and we are excited to see this important bill move forward. πŸ’™

Meet Dawn Omori, a college counselor and champion for scholars!

Dawn has spent 11 years doing one of the most meaningful things a person can do: showing up consistently for young people who need it most. As a United Friends college counselor, she has watched scholars grow from teenagers into thriving young adults. And she wouldn't trade it for anything. πŸ’™

A Gardena native and Bruin alum, we are so grateful to have Dawn in the United Friends family. πŸ’™

Our Whittier community room is getting a new look, and our community is helping shape it. πŸ’™

At our recent wellness event, guests were invited to vote on the name, flooring, storage colors, and even the neon sign that will bring the space to life. Every sticker placed was more than a vote. It was a reminder that the best spaces are built with the voices of the people who use them.

Thank you, Marmol Radziner, Eleven Eleven Construction, and UrbanWorks for helping bring this new space to life!

This Foster Care Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the realities foster youth face. πŸ’™

When a young person is worried about where their next meal is coming from, it becomes harder to focus on school, work, housing, and their future. At United Friends, we help youth access the support they need to build stable, independent lives.
