Justice Work Group - UCLA

Justice Work Group - UCLA Justice Work Group is a coalition of community members with the purpose of supporting those who have been adversely affected by mass incarceration.

Background:

The UCLA Justice Work Group was established in 2014 by a group of graduate students with the goal of creating a space for collaboration and productive discourse around legal system transformation and justice. The founding members include formerly incarcerated students, students from the UCLA Schools of Public Health, Education and Law as well as students from UCLA Departments of Afri

can American Studies, Philosophy and Social Welfare. It has since grown to partner with other formerly incarcerated advocates, other UCLA departments and faculty, local colleges, community organizations and individual allies. Recognizing that system transformation can happen in many ways, the Justice Work Group is responsive to the issues raised by its members and our work is grounded in the interests of those who are directly impacted by the U.S. carceral system. Anyone interested in being part of this group is encouraged to join and all members are welcome to propose initiatives and take leadership roles. Membership:

Members of the Justice Work Group are kept up to date on meetings, events, and initiatives. We ask members for input on activities and documents as well as to help raise awareness, organize, network, attend events, speak on behalf of the Work Group and take leadership roles whenever possible. “The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted to take the first steps in transitioning to a rehabilitative, ‘care-first’ model of juvenile justice, a plan expected to ultimately move funding and responsibility out of the probation department and into a new Department of Youth Development by 2025.

The move was based on a set of recommendations laid out in a report titled Youth Justice Reimagined, produced by the county’s Youth Justice Work Group. It calls for reducing the overall size and scope of the juvenile probation system and investing in community-based resources.”
