Our UCLA Labor Summer fellow, Jasmine Garcia Rodriguez, was featured on KCRW:

“We aided and conducted outreach to picket in front of the Board of Trustees’ district office, demand fair compensation for all faculty, [and] ask the board to negotiate in good faith.”

Her experience showed her just how much work and planning goes into these types of union actions. With the summer over, she plans to help the UCLA Labor Center get other students into field work.

UCLA’s Labor Center hosted a summer boot camp for future organizers, further cementing Los Angeles as the vanguard of the new labor movement.

"In the current national discussions of the recent labor upsurge, there is much said about increasing union density, but not so much about how we want unions to operate and what we want them to be able to win. LA’s hard-learned lessons on organizational transformation, democratic practices, power, scale, and working solidaristically across groups of workers through their unions provide important and visionary guideposts for the country."

Congratulations SEIU Local 99 on a historic tentative agreement! And UTLA for the immense show of solidarity for education workers! It's the right thing to do for the schools our K-12 students deserve. Solidarity is the way forward.

This week’s massive jobs action also represents a model for building worker power.

As we enter into our own negotiations with the District on smaller class sizes, safe and clean campuses, and more direct services and resources going to students, we understand the need to fight for the public schools our students deserve.

This is why on 3/15, we are joining UTLA and SEIU Local 99 in calling on the LAUSD Superintendent to use the District's $4.9 billion in reserves to invest in staff, students, and communities.
