YouthBuild Charter School of California

YouthBuild Charter School of California We are a free project-based high school for students ages 16-24+. It's not too late to graduate!

YouthBuild Charter School of California is a unique charter school model that provides young adults at YouthBuild programs with an authentic alternative to traditional school environments. Launched with support from YouthBuild USA in 2008, YCSC provides a project-based high school curriculum that relies on authentic assessment to fulfill credits towards a high school diploma. Young people between

the ages of 16-24 enroll at YCSC after having dropped out, aged out, or been otherwise failed by the traditional school system. Here they find an education that is more relevant to their goals, talents, and daily lives. Unlike traditional schools that employ standardized curriculum and classroom practices, which can often disempower and alienate marginalized students, YCSC’s project-based approach allows young adults to take ownership of their education. It offers them the means to pursue meaningful academic and professional success and gain the skills necessary to realize their personal dreams and goals. Our vision is that all young people, regardless of their circumstances, have access to an education that will prepare them to counter social inequities and realize their full potential. Our school empowers young people to transform themselves and become leaders in their communities. Our school is haven of trust and respect, where students can prepare for success in careers, post-secondary education and life.

In today’s we are thrilled to celebrate Jamilie Smith, a senior from our Pomona site at CORE Collaboration. As one of our amazing YPC (Youth Policy Council) members, Jamilie has participated in a wealth of fun leadership activities this year, including two trips to Sacramento. “Being part of the YPC had a big impact on me,” Jamilie shared. “I really enjoyed the YPC trips because they gave me new experiences, helped me build memories with other students, and allowed me to get out of my comfort zone.” After she walks across the graduation stage this month, Jamilie plans to focus on her career goals and surround herself with positive opportunities. Her future plan is to go to college and major in child development so she can one day work with children who have special needs. Congratulations, Jamilie, and don’t forget that once in YouthBuild, always in YouthBuild! 🎓🎉

Today’s is double the celebration because we are featuring not one, but two young people from our Lennox site at SBWIB YouthBuild, Daniel Estrada (left) and Renne Lopez (right)! After graduating in June, Daniel plans to go to trade school or join an apprenticeship to prepare for an eventual career in construction and Renne, who finished his credits in March, has started working. They both enjoyed working on CAPs (community action projects) that involved painting and fixing up spaces in their community. We wish both Daniel and Renne all the best as they move on to their next steps after they walk across the graduation stage in two weeks! 🎉🎓

We had a blast at Dreamcatcher Community Resource Center's Open House & Resource Fair in Norwalk today. The event was part of their Trimester 3 Community Action Project (CAP), and it provided an opportunity to meet their team, explore resources, celebrate student success, and learn more about the opportunities for students and families in the Norwalk area.

It’s amazing to see how far this program has come this year, and we can’t wait to see how co-directors Robert Montes and Julia Mijango continue to build out their program and make an even bigger impact on their community in the years to come! Thanks to all the community organizations who came out to table at the event. It was great getting to learn more about the work they’re doing and explore ways to collaborate in the future. There’s still an hour to go if you still want to stop by the event: 10931 Rosecrans Ave. in Norwalk.
