Our mission is to champion new plays that break down barriers of cultural misunderstanding, transform perspectives, and create space for fresh narratives to unfold. We keep a pulse on the social conversations happening in our global community, and are committed to incubating and presenting plays that directly address these questions. We believe in the power of theatre to challenge, reveal, and heal.

What’s happened after the performances
has become part of the story too.

The conversations.
The laughter in the lobby.
The moments where people stayed a little longer to reflect, connect, and share what the work opened up for them.

That’s what After the Hymn was created for.

We have two conversations remaining:

After the Hymn: Inside the Room
📍 Wednesday, May 27 following the 8 PM performance

A deeper look into the rehearsal process, character development, and the discoveries made inside the room.

After the Hymn: Exploring the Music of Hymn
📍 Sunday, June 7 following the 3 PM matinee

A conversation exploring how music moves through the production as memory, rhythm, and connection.

There’s a level of honesty this story asks for.

And in their recent conversation with host Andrew Cortes, Jason Delane, Chuma Gault, and Gregg T. Daniel spoke openly about the work it took to build the emotional world of HYMN.

The vulnerability.
The trust.
The willingness to go deeper so the story could move truthfully and fully through the room.

What you see on stage didn’t happen by accident. It was built through generosity, honesty, and a shared commitment to the humanity at the center of this play.

If you want to learn more about the creative process behind HYMN, join us for:

Nobody rushed out... and this is what happened.

People gathered around tables with wine glasses in hand.

Conversations stretched across the lobby.

Stories met other stories.

Strangers connected over music and memories.

Blackout Night and After the Hymn: Fathers & Sons reminded us what can happen when theatre creates space not only for performance, but for presence.

The room felt full in every sense of the word.

And the conversations that followed carried just as much honesty, vulnerability, and care as the work on stage.

We’re still holding onto those moments.

Two After the Hymn conversations still remain, along with the final weeks of HYMN.

Join us for the play.
Stay for what unfolds after.

Before the lights.
Before rehearsal.
Before the audience.

There were the words.

The kind that make you pause.
Underline the page.
Read the line again before moving on.

Lo**ta Chakrabarti created something in HYMN that feels deeply lived in...

a story carried through rhythm, memory, silence, and connection.

Even on the page, you can feel the heartbeat of it. These are some of the lines that stayed with us throughout the process. The ones that continued to echo inside the rehearsal room and beyond it.

Now, those words live on stage.

Lower Depth Theatre and the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble are deeply grateful for the opportunity to bring this story to audiences in Los Angeles.

And a special thank you to Lo**ta Chakrabarti for the generosity and care she extended to our creative team throughout the process of bringing HYMN to life.

HYMN follows two men whose unexpected connection begins to uncover shared histories, hidden wounds, and moments of joy.

The music doesn’t sit in the background.
It moves everything.

Jason Delane delivers a captivating, dynamic performance in Hymn, where rhythm, memory, and connection shape the story in real time.

HYMN
Two men. One unexpected meeting.
A bond that reveals more than either of them anticipated.

Some stories ask for more than direction...

They ask for care.
For understanding.
For someone who knows how to hold both the weight of the story and the space it needs to unfold.

Gregg T. Daniel, our director brings that to HYMN.

His work has lived across stages and stories, from August Wilson’s Fences (NAACP Best Director Award) to productions like Topdog/Underdog, The Mountaintop, and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

He is also the recipient of the 2025 Milton Katselas Award for Career Achievement in Direction.

With Hymn, Gregg T. Daniel returns to the Odyssey stage following his critically acclaimed direction of Kill Move Paradise in 2024.

This is a reflection of the depth and consistency he’s brought to the work over time.

Not as a list of achievements, but as a reflection of a continued commitment to stories that carry truth, history, and humanity.

As a founding member and Artistic Director of Lower Depth Theatre, that intention remains at the center of everything he creates.

And you can feel it here.

HYMN moves through memory, music, and connection and under his direction, it’s given the space to unfold with care.

We’re honored to have Gregg's vision guiding this work. We hope you will join us and experience his work on stage.

What happens after the story ends?

For us, that’s where something just as important begins.

After the Hymn is an invitation to stay a little longer. Sit with what you’ve experienced and step into conversation with others who felt it too.

We begin with Blackout Night.
🗓 Friday, May 15th at 8 PM

A space created with care and intention—
where Black audiences can come together
to experience Hymn in community.

A story rooted in the rhythms of Black life. In music that carries memory. In bonds that don’t need to be explained.

Just the story.
Just us.

A reception follows offering space to connect, reflect, and be in conversation with one another.

The series will continue, holding space for dialogue around fatherhood, identity,
music, and the vulnerability it takes to tell the truth out loud.

Because theatre doesn’t end at the curtain. It lives in what we take with us. And what we’re willing to share.

If you’ve been thinking about experiencing Hymn, this is your invitation.

Come for the play.
Stay for what it opens up.

🖤 In Tribute to Woodie King, Jr. 🖤

Lower Depth Theatre honors the life and legacy of Woodie King, Jr., whose passing marks a profound loss for Black Theatre across the country.

Though based in New York, Woodie King, Jr.’s influence on the Black Theatre movement—from the 1970s through today—was incalculable. As a director, producer, and visionary leader, he created space where Black artists could tell their stories with dignity, rigor, and unapologetic truth. His work shaped institutions, nurtured generations of artists, and helped define what Black Theatre could be—and must continue to be.

We join theaters, artists, and communities nationwide in honoring a giant whose legacy lives on in the stages he built, the voices he amplified, and the futures he made possible.

May his work continue to light the way.
Rest in power, Mr. King. 🕯️
