🇰🇷🇺🇸 Today we celebrate Korean American Day, recognizing our history, resilience, and the countless contributions of Korean Americans who continue to shape and strengthen our communities. Did you know that the first significant wave of Korean immigrants was documented 123 years ago, on January 13, 1903? Today, 29% of Korean Americans reside in LA!
We are proud to uplift two trailblazing Korean American community leaders whose courage, service, and leadership inspire us to keep showing up for our community, especially in these uncertain and trying times. Recently, we had the honor of presenting entrepreneur and community leader May Park with the Local Hero Award and civil rights lawyer Do Kim with the Legacy Leadership Award.
🤲 May Park, Founder of Skid Row People’s Market
is a community-powered grocery shop addressing food apartheid in the heart of Skid Row. May worked tirelessly, ensuring that her community had access to healthy, affordable, culturally-resonant foods, and other essential resources. In a region with a large unhoused population, Skid Row Market is a safe space where they are treated with dignity. May’s story was featured in the documentary by .
In 2025, the shop was acquired by , a local Black-led organization working to advance social justice by creating equitable opportunities in the area. We celebrate its next chapter, rooted in the Park family’s founding values.
⚖️ Do Kim, Civil Rights Attorney
Do Kim is a civil rights attorney working to advance justice for marginalized communities, with a focus on employment discrimination, police misconduct, and wrongful conviction. Beyond the courtroom, Do has been a longtime community organizer and leader, from supporting Korean American merchants after the 1992 LA Uprising to facilitating youth leadership and gang intervention programs.
As we honor their impact, we also look ahead with hope. We thank Korean American leaders including May Park and Do Kim, who continue to guide us by modeling collective care, intergenerational leadership, and the bold courage to imagine something better for our community.
