Texas students are being taught a version of Islamic history that critics say reduces Islam to violence, slavery, and conflict, and frames 9/11 through the broad label of “radical Islam” rather than identifying al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

These standards don’t just shape what students learn about history, they shape how an entire community is understood. Muslim Texans have challenged this portrayal as inaccurate and misleading.

Anti-Muslim bigotry should not receive a standing ovation.

At the Jewish American Summit in Los Angeles on August 30, speakers Mosab Hassan Yousef and Gad Saad were given a prominent platform to make inflammatory statements about Islam and Muslims, including degrading attacks on the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, and Islam itself.

What makes this especially concerning is who provided the platform. The summit was hosted by Aish LA / Aish Global and sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish National Fund, and other prominent organizations with significant influence in American civic life.

H.R. 4795 would tie certain federal education funding to whether colleges and universities participate in covered commercial boycotts of Israel. It would also place new requirements on institutions related to academic programs in Israel.

MPAC and A New Policy oppose the bill because of what it could mean for academic freedom and institutional independence. Federal education funding should not be used as a tool to pressure colleges and universities over their positions on contested political issues.

The implications also extend beyond this particular issue. Allowing the government to condition funding in this way sets a troubling precedent for how federal resources could be used to influence lawful political expression and decision-making on college campuses.

We’re urging Congress to vote NO on H.R. 4795.
