This week we celebrated the groundbreaking of the Glendale Hyperion Bridge Project 🎉🏗️

The Glendale Hyperion Bridge Improvement Project represents over 20 years of development and collaboration between the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering (BOE) and our partners at Caltrans HQ , Council District 4, Council District 13, along with other agencies at the Federal, State & Local levels 🤝

FUN FACT: This nearly 100-year-old bridge was completed in 1929, well before the LA River was encased in concrete. It has been featured in movies over the years and is even replicated at Disney’s California Adventure 🎬✨

This project has truly been a team effort, from planning to design and implementation. We want to thank our agency partners and the residents of Council Districts 4 & 13 who were involved in discussions over the years to help shape this design 👷‍♀️👷‍♂️

A special acknowledgement to our Deputy City Engineer Katherine Doherty, Commissioner Faith Mitchell, Councilmember Nithya Raman, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, and our partners at Caltrans HQ.

We’re looking forward to the ribbon cutting ceremony ✂️🎀

Congratulations to our April photo of the month winner, Kristen Wong! 🎉📸 Thank you for your super cool photo of the Geotechnical Engineering Division constructing a bulkhead road repair in the Palisades.

Here we have BOE's Geotechnical Engineering Division completing 5 repairs and currently working on 2 more sites as part of the Palisades Fire Rebuilding effort. 🚧

The project shown in the photo is restoring lateral support to Posetano Road by installing a new pre-cast concrete lagging and steel beam bulkhead. 🏗️

Let's see who will be our winner next month. 👀

Today, Interim City Engineer Alfred Mata joined Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, Commissioner John Grant, City leaders, and community partners to celebrate Earth Day 🌎🌿 with a press conference unveiling the designs for the MacArthur Park Stormwater Quality Improvement Project 💧✨

This landmark $40 million investment, funded by Measure W, will transition MacArthur Park Lake from relying on potable water to a sustainable flow-through system that captures and treats local runoff. The project will introduce nature-based solutions and community-focused amenities, including a new water feature shade trees, improved pedestrian paths, a pedestrian bridge, and educational signage. Updates were also shared on project bidding and a projected groundbreaking in Fall 2026 🏗️.

Building on more than $27 million in prior investments led by Councilmember Hernandez, this effort continues the revitalization of MacArthur Park with initiatives like clean teams, harm reduction and overdose response services, violence prevention, solar lighting, landscaping, family-friendly programming, and an upcoming Health Hub. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 🌳

Our fourth stop in our BOE Project Tour Series, Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. 💦

A big thank you to all of our BOE tour participants, and a special shoutout to our tour guide Juan Cardenas and his team.🌟

The Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant is the City’s sewage treatment plant located next to Dockweiler State Beach on Santa Monica Bay. The plant is the largest sewage treatment facility in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area and one of the largest plants in the world. Hyperion is operated by the Bureau of Sanitation, with additional support from the Bureau of Engineering. 🌊

"When you turn on a faucet in L.A., clean water continuously flows out. However, millions of people in other countries live on less than three gallons each day, and many walk miles to fetch their family's water. When clean water becomes plentiful, the time previously spent fetching can be used to grow food, raise animals, and even start a business." ♻️

Last week, we celebrated a new pedestrian safety upgrade at Pico Blvd & Kenmore Ave in CD1. 🚶‍♀️

This project includes a new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system and five ADA-compliant curb ramps, making it safer and more accessible for everyone crossing the street.

This is just one step in our Highway Safety Improvement Program (Cycle 7), which will bring:

• 19 RRFBs
• 1 High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK)
• 28 upgraded curb ramps
• Protected left-turn signals at 29 intersections

We’re excited to keep the momentum going and bring more safety improvements to our communities. 🚨
