Congratulations to our CEO, Amber Rivas, MSW, who has been nominated for the LA Times Studios Inspirational Women Forum & Leadership Awards!

The recognition is well deserved. Since joining Aviva in 2023, Amber has led the agency through a period of significant growth—expanding our budget by 40%, introducing a new mission, vision and values that shaped the five-year strategic plan launched this July, and helping Aviva reach a record level of mental health service delivery in fiscal year 2025–2026.

We’re excited to welcome Poieto as a new partner at Aviva’s Lifting Youth Up Drop-In Center!

Poieto helps young people build confidence with AI and other technology tools through creative, hands-on learning. During a recent workshop, youth reflected on what they would tell their past and future selves, then used AI to transform their words into original images they could print.

The workshop invited youth to look both backward and forward—reflecting on their experiences while giving themselves space to imagine what’s possible ahead.

The hotter it gets outside, the busier it gets inside our drop in center.

Young people come through our doors to cool down, eat, rest, charge a phone and connect with support.

Extreme heat makes the need especially visible right now. Heavy rain or cold weather may make it visible again this winter.

Whatever is happening outside, our goal is the same: to create a place where young people know they are welcome.

If you need a place to go? The Lifting Youth Up Drop-In Center is open every day from 3pm - 9pm.

More teens are being referred to Aviva for foster care, but there are not enough resource homes available to welcome them.

Opening your home to a teen can mean offering stability during an uncertain time, helping a young person prepare for adulthood, and becoming a trusted adult they can count on. Teens also bring their own interests, personalities, goals, and strengths—and the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with them can be incredibly rewarding.

One of our staff's favorite days of the year returned: Aviva’s annual cultural potluck!

Our team came together to celebrate the many cultures that make up Aviva, sharing food, music, photos and traditions with one another. We sampled dishes from Japan, Honduras, Guatemala and beyond, played Lotería, won raffle prizes and—most importantly—enjoyed some time together outside of the everyday routine.

We’re grateful for the chance to learn more about one another, celebrate what makes each of us unique and have a little fun along the way.

It’s back to school for students...and our therapists!

Aviva provides school-based mental health services at 15 LAUSD schools, giving students a place to talk through anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD and other challenges—without having to leave campus.

For Wanda Vasquez (pictured here), Aviva’s Assistant Clinical Director, that accessibility is one of the most important parts of the program: “Removing the location barrier supports many families that might otherwise face difficulties in getting to a session consistently. We also have the opportunity to team with their school supports to provide a collaborative approach in therapy.”

Back-to-school season began with supplies, creativity and community at Wallis House.

Children received school essentials, and families took part in raffles for grocery and food gift cards, blankets and a tote bag. They also spent time painting—and the results were full of color, imagination and personality.

We're excited to share that nine young people from our Lifting Youth Up Drop-In Center were selected to participate in a guaranteed income program known as Supporting Transitional-Aged Youth and Survivors in Achieving Financial Empowerment, or STAY SAFE.

Participants will receive $1,000 a month for two years to use where they need it most—whether that means rent, groceries, transportation, education, or greater financial stability. For a young person living close to the edge, rising costs can quickly turn an everyday expense into a crisis. This support will provide breathing room, greater choice, and the ability to plan for what comes next.

Big thanks to the Office of Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, Los Angeles City Council District 13, for selecting Aviva to help connect eligible young people with this opportunity.
