August 15, 1945 β Koreaβs Liberation Day from Japanese Colonization
On this day 81 years ago, Koreaβs long fight for freedom bore fruit as the nation was liberated from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule.
Gwangbokjeol β βthe day the light returnedβ honors the resilience of the Korean people especially the independence activists who risked life and limb, the ordinary citizens who never stopped believing in a FREE Korea, and the generations who rebuilt a nation from the ground up.
As Korean Americans, we carry that legacy forward. Our community was shaped by immigrants who brought with them not just language and food and tradition, but the hard-won knowledge that freedom is never guaranteed.
Freedom isnβt free. It must be protected, generation after generation, through civic participation, community, and courage.
Today we remember those who sacrificed for liberation. We celebrate the vibrant, resilient culture they made possible. And we recommit to the values that connect our heritage to our lives here: democracy, justice, and a voice for every community.
We also remember and fight for others who are seeking their own freedom and justice from genocide, colonization, and oppression.
