Ready to unearth a story this summer?

We’re thrilled to announce that we have been selected by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) to curate and host the 2026 Summer Reading Program. This nine-week literary experience is designed for readers who are blind or have low vision, but anyone, anywhere is welcome to participate. No library card required!

Join us as we discover stories hidden in landscapes, archives, family histories, science, and lived experience through virtual author conversations. We’ll also be exploring four National Parks through a new Narrated Soundscapes series, with a new episode dropping every other week.

The Summer Reading Program officially kicks off on June 15th. Don’t miss out—sign up today on our website! https://bit.ly/43jFn7G

Teachers are often the first to notice when something isn’t quite right.

From a student who avoids reading to one who struggles to stay focused, and more.

It’s easy to look at behavior or learning differences first. But in many cases, the issue is vision, which may be simpler but harder to spot.

Not all vision problems are obvious, and many aren’t picked up through routine screenings.

That’s why your observations as a teacher matter more than you think.

When you notice patterns early, you help open the door to the right kind of support for children in your care.

Swipe to learn more about the signs and how you can help.

Most people don’t notice when something is inaccessible.

They just move on.

But for over a billion people with disabilities, that barrier can mean being locked out of essential information or services, and even entire opportunities.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day today challenges the people building digital spaces to rethink what access really means.

True inclusion is about who you consider from the start rather than adding features later.

Let’s commit to doing better and creating products everyone can access and rely on.

For years, Jan’s work kept her constantly on the move while driving miles and checking details.

So when her vision began to change, adjusting to a completely different pace of life was a hurdle she had to surpass.

Instead of waiting, Jan chose to reach out.

At Braille Institute, she found practical support and tools like audiobooks that made reading possible again alongside people who could guide her through the uncertainty of change.

Her journey is still unfolding, but she’s not navigating it alone.

At one point, even a simple walk felt uncertain for Bette with moments that required hesitation instead of ease.

But Bette was looking to adapt rather than slow down.

Through mobility training and support from Braille Institute, she began to move through her world with awareness and skill.

Today, she walks and travels confidently and continues learning new ways to stay independent.

Her story is a reminder that adjusting to vision loss is about finding new ways to keep going rather than losing what you love.

Let’s give a warm welcome to our 2026 Braille Challenge Finals keynote speaker: Mike Mulligan!

Mike Mulligan is a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT), content creator, and advocate. His work draws on both his personal experience with vision loss due to Coats’ disease and more than 10 years of experience in the field helping people who are blind or have low vision live independently.

Through his clinical work and his social media content, Mike educates people on assistive technology, orientation and mobility, and strategies for living more independently with vision loss.

He also has a special connection to Braille Institute—he first began working with the blind and low vision community as an intern at our Anaheim Center!

We can’t wait for Mike to join us at Braille Challenge Finals next month! Follow along with Mike and his work at BlindOnTheMove.com or follow him at Blind on the Move.
