‘Star Trek’ first aired on this day in 1966, so today is ‘Star Trek Day’ and marks 60 years since the starship Enterprise began its adventures.

You might not think ‘Star Trek’ and Metro have much in common, but they actually share a lot of history. It turns out Metro is a bit of a geek too!

It began when George ‘Mr. Sulu’ Takei served on the RTD Board from 1973 to 1984. He cast the deciding vote to start the Metro Rail system, helped create the Metro Art Program, and hosted the opening of the Regional Connector in 2023.

Almost a year ago, Wil Wheaton, also known as Wesley Crusher from ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, hosted the opening of the A Line Extension to Pomona.

Just this May, Jerry O’Connell, who voices Captain Jack Ransom on ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks,’ hosted the opening of Section 1 of the D Line Extension.

You can even find ‘Star Trek’ imagery in the artwork at 7th/Metro Station. The piece, called ‘The Movies: Fantasies & Spectacles,’ is by renowned artist Joyce Kozloff.

When you think about it, ‘Star Trek’ and Metro have a lot in common. We both:

C LINE: From Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 13, at 10 am, Avalon Station will be closed due to inspection and maintenance of the overhead power system. Trains will operate between Norwalk and Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station, and between Harbor Fwy and LAX/Metro Transit Center stations. Bus shuttles will provide service to Willowbrook/Rosa Parks, Avalon, and Harbor Fwy stations.

Progress continues on the Metro G Line Improvements Project, bringing riders one step closer to a faster, safer, and more reliable trip across the San Fernando Valley!

As of August 2026, the Van Nuys Blvd bridge is approximately 77% complete, the Vesper Ave bridge is 59% complete, and the Sepulveda Blvd bridge is 10% complete. Work has also begun on the new Van Nuys Station, which will serve riders on the elevated G Line and feature a bike hub, public art, and improved accessibility for riders and the community.

Upcoming work includes bike path improvements, railroad-style gated intersections, and traffic signal upgrades designed to enhance safety and improve travel times. The project remains on schedule for completion in late 2027.

Once completed, the project will reduce travel times by 12 minutes, or nearly 22%, allow for five-minute bus headways, and eliminate the potential for motorist intrusions onto the busway.

We’re working to keep Metro’s Throne restrooms available to riders while helping maintain safe, welcoming station environments.

At Westlake/MacArthur Park Station on the B and D Lines, our Community Intervention Specialists reported that the restroom was being sometimes occupied beyond its 10-minute limit — due to unwanted activity — reducing access for other riders.

Data from more than one million Throne restroom sessions show that the average visit lasts less than three minutes. Based on that information, Metro and Throne launched a pilot adjusting the session time at Westlake/MacArthur Park from 10 minutes to five — still providing nearly twice the time used during an average visit.

The early results are encouraging: daily overstays have dropped nearly 70%, substantially increasing restroom availability for Metro riders and the community, with no complaints about the adjusted time.

We’ll continue monitoring the pilot and evaluating whether similar changes could improve access at other stations with high demand or comparable challenges. We’ve installed Thrones at 64 stations, helping address a long-standing rider complaint about the scarcity of public restrooms along our system.
