Regular fare riders on Metro can now pay fare simply by tapping a credit or debit card — either a physical card or a card stored in a smartphone wallet — at validators on buses and at Metro Rail stations.

The same feature is now available on 25 local transit agencies that participate in TAP, making it easier to travel across the region using one familiar payment method.

All major cards are accepted, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB and UnionPay. Cities around the world — including New York, Chicago, London, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo — already use similar systems, and now Metro riders can enjoy the same convenience.

Reduced-fare riders should continue using TAP cards for now. Credit/debit card payment for reduced fares is expected in early 2027.

Two important things to know:

• TAP cards are not going away. Riders can still pay with plastic or digital TAP cards, and cash will continue to be accepted on Metro buses.

• Fare capping remains in place. Riders should use the same credit/debit card or TAP card throughout their trip to receive benefits such as free transfers within two hours and free rides once daily or weekly fare caps are reached.

Using contactless fare payment is simple:

• Choose the card you want to use — either a physical card or one stored in your phone’s digital wallet.

• Tap the card or phone on the TAP validator when boarding a bus or entering a rail station.

When the validator lights up green, you’re good to go.

Metro riders should remember to use the same card in the same form throughout a trip. For example, if you tap with a physical card when boarding, continue using the physical card instead of switching to the digital version stored on your phone.

Doing so ensures riders receive free transfers, fare capping benefits and discounted transfers between Metro and participating TAP agencies.

Riders can also pay for friends or family members using the same card — up to four additional riders in one group. Keep your group together during the trip so everyone can transfer smoothly and provide proof of fare if requested.

Bike Month throwback cause the people still wanna know⬇️
We all know it’s stressful trying to load your bike onto the bus rack with a busload of passengers and driver waiting for you to figure it out.

Try not to panic — instead, slow down and remember the three basic steps (different racks may have slight variations):

Lower the rack to the horizontal position (you may have to squeeze the locking mechanism to do this)
Lift your bike onto the rack, ensuring the wheel falls into the rack’s wheel well. If there is no other bike on the rack, place your bike in the slot closest to the bus. If there is another bike already on the rack, face your bike in the opposite direction of the other bike — handlebars to saddle).
Swing the wheel hook over your front wheel and ensure it sits snugly against your tire.
(Optional) Step back and admire your work for a split second before you get on the bus.

Our bus operators can’t load your bike for you, but they can verbally explain what to do, so if you’re really struggling, ask for help! And remember, the best way to learn this is by doing. We often have buses parked at events like where you can practice in a low-stakes environment.

We held a groundbreaking on Wednesday morning in Glendale for the North Hollywood-to-Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit Project. Video of the ceremony is below.

The 19-mile project will include 22 stations near where people live and work in NoHo, Burbank, Glendale, Eagle Rock and Pasadena. The line will make it easier to travel between the B and G Lines in NoHo, the A Line in Pasadena and PCC.

We are excited to announce that we are very close to achieving our goal of delivering 64 Throne Restrooms across our system by June 2026. Over the past few weeks, 8 Throne Restrooms have been deployed at these Metro stations:

Compton (A)
Del Amo (A)
Hollywood/Vine (B)
Lynwood (C)
Wilshire/LA Brea (D)
Wilshire/Fairfax (D)
Sepulveda (G)
LA General Medical Center (J)

Additionally, more restrooms will be installed at these stations soon:

Arcadia (A)
Grand/LATTC (A)
Pico (A/E)
Expo/La Brea (E)
Expo Park/USC (E)

To date, these high-tech, touchless, ADA accessible portable restrooms have served over 800,000 people at Metro stations with a resilient 3.8 out of 5-star user cleanliness rating.

Metro riders have told us loud and clear: they want a cleaner, safer system with more people paying fares on buses and trains.

Metro teams recently joined LAPD and our Low Income Fare Is Easy (LIFE) program on Line 754 on Vermont Avenue to educate riders about TAP cards, our fare compliance work and Metro's fare assistance programs.

Quick background: Vermont is one of Metro’s busiest bus corridors. Line 754 is also a bus line with all-door boarding that requires all riders to use TAP cards to pay fares. (Our J Line and Line 720 on Wilshire are similar).

So it makes sense to improve fare compliance on this line. As part of that work, staff signed riders up for LIFE discounts, helped students learn about GoPass and answered fare-related questions from riders and bus operators.

We’ve found that education is a big part of fare compliance — rather than solely taking punitive steps. This work on Line 754 is part of our broader effort to improve the rider experience through better access control, cleaner stations and increased safety across the system. We'll be continuing this work on the 754 for the next several weeks.
