Building Bridges and Empowering Communities Los Angeles, California – February 19, 2026 – The Bahamas Consulate General Los Angeles proudly marks the second anniversary of its official opening, a milestone that underscores the enduring commitment of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to its diaspora and international partners on the West Coast of the United States.
Established on February 19, 2024, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister the Honourable Philip Edward Davis K.C. M.P. and Foreign Affairs Minister the Honourable Frederick A. Mitchell, the Consulate General has evolved into a vital hub for consular services, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration.
Since our inception, led by Consul General Joy A. Newbold, the mission has expanded its reach across a 12-state jurisdiction, including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Over the past two years, we have provided essential support to thousands of Bahamians and friends of The Bahamas, fostering resilience and unity in an ever-changing world. Reflecting on the progress since our first anniversary in February 2025, the Consulate General has achieved remarkable strides in diplomatic engagement, community outreach, and promotional initiatives. Some of the Key highlights include:
Cultural and Independence Celebrations: In July 2025, we hosted a series of events commemorating The Bahamas' 52nd Independence Anniversary, The Consulate General welcomed the renowned radio personality Spence Finlayson and team ZNS who interviewed 2x, CG Newbold and other notable Bahamian nationals in the jurisdiction for their special programming Immediate Response. The 52nd Anniversary events culminated in "The Rhythms of Our Nation" – a vibrant cultural showcase on July 4th in collaboration with Alleyne Connect U. This event brought together artists, performers, and community leaders to celebrate Bahamian heritage through music, dance, and storytelling, strengthening cultural bonds in Los Angeles.
Diplomatic Calls and Community Engagements: Consul General Newbold conducted productive courtesy meetings, including a key discussion with Ambassador Ezra Chiloba Simiyu of the Consul General of the Republic of Kenya in Los Angeles in December 2025, aimed at enhancing our bilateral relations. We also continued outreach efforts, traveling to additional states and connecting with Bahamian communities to offer guidance on consular matters such as passport renewals and MyGateway eGov services.
Staff Expansion and Operational Enhancements: In December 2025, welcomed Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Jarrett Russell as our newest team member, bolstering our capacity to continue to deliver efficient services. This addition has supported our ongoing efforts in emergency consular assistance, visa processing, and public advisories, including timely responses to U.S. policy updates in January 2026.
Promoting Tourism and Economic Growth: Aligning with The Bahamas' record-breaking 12.5 million visitor arrivals in 2025 – an 11.4% increase over the previous year – the Consulate General collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism, Aviation and Investments LA team to promote investment opportunities and creative marketing campaigns. A notable initiative featured a group of Los Angeles-based professionals developing innovative promotional content for The Bahamas, highlighting our islands' appeal to West Coast audiences.
Community Support and Philanthropy: In early February 2026, we spotlighted "Bahamians Giving Back," recognizing local diaspora members for their contributions, including ongoing support for youth programs like the Jr. NBA Clinics. These efforts reinforce our role in empowering Bahamians abroad through advocacy and resource sharing.
Consul General Joy A. Newbold remarked, "As we celebrate this second anniversary, I am inspired by the growth we've witnessed and the partnerships we've nurtured. From our cultural festivals to our expanded team and economic promotions, we've not only served our community but also elevated The Bahamas' presence in this dynamic region. Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to innovation, inclusivity, and excellence, ensuring that every Bahamian feels connected to home while we forge new opportunities for collaboration with our American neighbors."
The Consulate General invites the Bahamian diaspora, local partners, and friends to join in upcoming events, including outreach sessions and cultural programs planned for the spring.
