🎨 We are ecstatic to announce acclaimed artist, Lauren Halsey as one of the 2026 Colors of Connection Gala honorees! ✨

🌴 Based in South Central Los Angeles where her family has lived for several generations, Lauren Halsey is a visionary artist who produces standalone sculptures, graphically maximalist collages that blend real and imagined geographies, and site specific projects that include immersive installations that bridge sculpture and architecture. She rethinks the possibilities for art, architecture, and community engagement.

🌟 We are so excited to have Lauren Halsey join us as an honoree, and also, she’ll be lending her artistic talents to produce original artwork for Colors of Connection that will be carried throughout the event’s visual identity!

🌟 We are honored to announce Dr. Bob K. Ross as one of our honorees at the 2026 Colors of Connection Gala 🎉

💫 Robert K. Ross, M.D., is the recently retired President and Chief Executive Officer of The California Endowment (The California Endowment), a statewide health foundation established to improve the health and well-being of Californians.

♥️ During more than two decades at The California Endowment, Dr. Ross championed community-led efforts to advance health equity across California. Through the Endowment’s landmark Building Healthy Communities initiative – a project that LA Commons took part in with community murals throughout South LA – he helped invest in grassroots leadership and community-driven change across the state.

Are you ready to celebrate?! 🎨🎉 LA Commons will be celebrating FOUR new mural panels and FIVE new utility box artworks that were made in Pacoima, for Pacoima, with Pacoima community! 💖

🤝 LA Commons has partnered with Pacoima Beautiful, The Trust for Public Land, Tia Chucha’s and other local partners to transform public spaces in Pacoima through community-centered art. This project engaged local artists, youth apprentices, and community members to create murals and utility box artworks that reflect Pacoima’s unique stories, values, and cultural connections to sustainability and the environment.

☀️ We’ll be celebrating these new public artworks with Pacoima Beautiful at their Prende El Sol event. You can expect music, food and solar activities happening while also admiring the beautiful new pieces of art.

And you’ll even be able to meet the talented artists behind the stunning art! 🖌️✨ Join us in celebrating artists Elvia Aguirre, Litzy Del Valle, Kimberly Guzman, Nico Martinez, Juan Pablo Reyes, Desiree Sanchez – and of course, our amazing Pacoima youth artists!

💚 Prophet Walker is an amazing community advocate, entrepreneur and the founder of Treehouse Co-Living and Community Labs! He is from Watts in South LA, and is always giving back to his community. Perfectly aligned with LA Commons, he centers cultivating joy and connection within community. He shares more below:

This year’s theme is “Rooted and Rising” 🌴💪🏾 a celebration of LA Commons’ role as a key partner of the newly designated Historic South LA Black Cultural District and the communities, artists, and cultural leaders whose work continues to preserve, celebrate, and shape South LA’s rich cultural legacy. 💙💖 Supporting the Colors of Connection Gala allows LA Commons to continue offering high quality arts and cultural programming all across South LA.

Our Development Manager, Sara, shares “That’s what I love about the Gala. It’s not just a fundraiser. It’s a chance for all of us to come together and celebrate the people and diverse communities who are all part of the journey to ‘create cultural connections.’”

Located at the 🟣Metro D Line Fairfax station is the beautiful mural, “Hands and Things” by artist Karl Haendel (Karl Haendel).

🫶 This piece features hands of community members holding functional objects, crafted locally and spanning from the prehistoric era to today. Each object tells a story of the neighborhood’s identity. The artwork itself aims to showcase the cultural richness and generational diversity of the surrounding community. 💖

👀 And you may also notice a familiar hand at the top right… You guessed it! That hand belongs to our wonderful Executive Director, Karen Mack!

🚆 Karen is a public transit champion! She is an avid rider, constantly taking the Metro to her meetings and to community events, and uplifting the importance of public transportation by example.

Shoutout to Metro Art Los Angeles and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the wonderful public transportation and beautiful art to go along with it! ❣️💜

We love Leimert Park! 🌴♥️

Leimert Park is home to LA Commons’ annual Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks, our office space shared in Ben R Caldwell, and is one of our core neighborhoods where we engage youth artists and resident advisors in arts and cultural programming! ✨🎨

📸 These pictures were taken by Kim Espinosa, our 2026 LA County Department of Arts and Culture Intern working on our Development team!

🎓📚 Kim is a recent graduate of Northwestern University with a BS in Communication Studies and Cognitive Science and a minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies. Through organizing, design work and education, she’s dedicated to improving health outcomes and community well-being by expanding equitable access to community services. She tells us more about her experience below:

“My favorite part of the internship has been connecting with more parts of the city through LA Commons’ presence at community events. Joining this year’s Festival of Masks as one of my first events during the internship was a reminder about how valuable public events are to community empowerment and healing. I hope traditions like this continue to grow in Leimert Park and beyond.

“Photographing South LA brings me a lot of joy because I see the commonalities between L.A.’s neighborhoods. Many similarities stand out to me, but one I want to especially highlight is how the community is protecting and uplifting the spaces that one grew up going to, as well as the celebration of the many cultures present. From the storefronts to the murals, the diverse elements that make up the community are integral to placekeeping. It’s amazing to see and be part of efforts that LA Commons does to uplift that!”
