⛰️ Happy AANHPI Month! We decided to celebrate by visiting the to see the amazing and beautiful exhibit, “Mountain Spirits: Rice and Indigeneity in the Northern Luzon Highlands, Philippines.”

✨ LA Commons staff members enjoyed immersing themselves in the rich history and culture of the Ifugao of northern Luzon. The exhibit explores the spirituality and environmental care of the region by showcasing the carved guardians, ritual bowls, woven blankets and more.

We connect deeply to the importance of uplifting and preserving culture and stories. Alex, Communications Coordinator at LA Commons, reflects, “It’s great to see my histories actually be in a museum. Sometimes, the Philippines, my culture and heritage can feel so far away and disconnected, but seeing it on display makes me feel empowered. It feels powerful to know your ancestry and I hope to continue building that feeling for everyone through work at LA Commons!” 🇵🇭♥️

And did you know? Our board member, Hannah Yoo, is the Curator of Public Programs at the Fowler! 🌟 We are so grateful to be deepening our partnership with Hannah and the Fowler.

📅 “Mountain Spirits” is on view from April 2026 to January 2027

🌸🎉 Congrats to Rhythms of the Village for another amazing Spring Festival last week!

The Altadena community showed up! This day was full of rich culture, lively performances, amazing vendors and new friends. LA Commons had so much fun creating art with families through mask-making and butterflies! 🦋🎭✨

Thank you again to for hosting such a beautiful event. The cultural connections and historical ties between Leimert and Altadena have led us to what Karen Mack describes as an “extraordinary partnership,” and we are grateful for the bridges we are building between our two Villages ♥️

✨ Today we are highlighting King Daunté Nabi Fyall () – one of our master teaching artists for the Festival of Masks weekly community workshops! 🕺

King Daunté began his journey with West African Dance pioneer, Papa Assane Konte. What started as a search for rhythm became a lifelong calling. Now he teaches through the DAANSEKOU Cultural Arts & Wellness Collective where he weaves people, villages, generations and ancestral knowledge together through movement, joy and unity. 💫

Not here to gatekeep culture but to open the circle wider, Daunté remains profoundly grateful to pour love back into the community that raised him. Every class is an invitation to remember who we truly are, connected by the drum, rooted in respect, and lifted by the great spirit of our Ancestors. Join Daunté on Saturdays in Leimert Park to immerse yourself in dance! ♥️💃

Festival of Masks workshops with Daunté:
🕚 11AM - 12PM (new, updated time!!) followed by mask-making and drumming!
