Zone Zero is California’s new wildfire safety standard focused on creating a 0–5 foot buffer around homes using non-combustible materials.

The goal is to reduce the risk of homes igniting from embers and fast-moving fire in high-risk areas like Los Angeles.

At the same time, it’s raised concerns from residents about reducing tree cover and vegetation that provide shade, cooling, and the character of our community. This workshop is an opportunity to hear updates, ask questions, and share your thoughts and concerns.

"Safety concerns are growing after at least two women said they were attacked at the Silver Lake Reservoir in separate incidents." - ABC News

From the team:

I wanted to reach out regarding the recent serious safety concerns around the Silver Lake Reservoir.

Our office was made aware of the reported assaults near the reservoir over the weekend. We then escalated the reports to LAPD, who has now opened an investigation into these incidents. We are working alongside LAPD, Council District 13, and our office to share out more information should it become available. If anyone reaches out with information regarding these incidents, please have them contact LAPD or SLO Ramirez.

It has also come to our attention that the lights along Armstrong Hill have been operating incorrectly. The Silver Lake Reservoir Conservancy reached out to let us know that the lights appear to be mis-timed and have been coming on during the day, but not at night. Our CD4 Leadership Team has escalated this outage to the Bureau of Street Lighting. Given this serious safety concern, we are working to prioritize their repair as quickly as possible. We are also working alongside CD13 to this end.

There are also several utilitarian lights in the area, which are out. Utilitarian lights are lights that are mounted on the wooden DWP pole and are managed by DWP. We have also reached out to their department to request repairs.

Finally, our LA Conservation Corps teams will be going out onto the Armstrong Hill path by the reservoir this week to do some weeding and cut back tree growth that is blocking visibility of the path. We are coordinating with the SL Rec Center in this effort.

As I mentioned, we will share more information should it become available, but I wanted to make sure that you all knew that we are aware of the neighborhoods concerns and are taking this matter very seriously. Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your continued leadership.

Smart Gardening to Reduce Mosquito Bites

The Problem: Mosquitoes

Many yards have non-native plants like bromeliads, which hold water and need frequent watering. This can create standing water around your home, such as in plant saucers. Plants with dense leafy growth also provide cool, shady areas where adult mosquitoes prefer to rest. A backyard full of mosquitoes is dangerous to your household and community because they can transmit diseases like:

• West Nile virus (the most pervasive threat in California)
• Dengue fever and chikungunya (spread by invasive Aedes mosquitoes)

Take Action: Mosquitoes can grow in as little as a bottle cap of water. Spot areas where water collects and consider transforming your yard with native plants to save water and help reduce mosquitoes.

The Solution: Less Water = Fewer Mosquitoes

Removing standing water around your home is one of the easiest ways to limit mosquito activity.

Consider also planting native plants, which need little water, reduce mosquito resting spots, and add beauty to your yard.

Eliminate Sources:
• Empty plant saucers at least once a week
• Properly seal rain barrels and use collected water
• Turn over or store buckets and watering cans indoors

A Win for Your Garden: Native plants require little water, helping reduce standing water and mosquitoes while saving on water bills. They also attract beneficial insects that support a healthy, thriving garden.

From

Have you noticed that while some of the trees on West Silver Lake Drive are as glorious as they should be, many are truncated, weirdly pruned and a little sad looking? This has been a mystery for a number of months, but we have solved part of it. A community member had taken it upon themselves to hack away any branches they thought looked, in their eyes, wrong. In previous posts we have pointed out we never shame people - at this point, let us amend that to “almost never.” The community member has been informed that it is in fact illegal to trim public trees without a license.

There is still another mystery. Many trees on that side of the reservoir now sport zipties. We have cut them off when walking by and the zipties have reappeared. This is a method of choking trees to death - it prevents water from traveling under the bark and will, in time, kill the tree. We encourage you to please send us photos if you see zipties on trees again so we can cut them off.

The Glendale-Hyperion Project and the Bridges of Silver Lake

"Ask Silver Lake” explores the history and insights of our community. If you have questions or ideas you’d like us to consider, please drop a comment or send them to [email protected].

Thank you for submitting this piece.

The iconic Victory Memorial Bridge (Glendale-Hyperion Viaduct), connecting Los Feliz and Silver Lake on the Los Angeles River’s west bank with Atwater on the east, has for years been beset by long-standing structural and maintenance challenges. For years, too, its muddled traffic configuration has made it as much of a barrier between neighborhoods as a connection. After years of delays, all that is finally set to change.

This month’s “Ask Silver Lake,” is a look at that bridge — both its history and what’s in store. We’ll also direct our attention to the community’s other bridges — present and past. Ask Silver Lake” is dedicated to exploring the history and insights of our community. If you have questions or ideas you’d like us to consider, please drop a comment or send them to [email protected].

The $208 million bridge renovation, spearheaded by the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering, aims to make transiting this century-old structure both safer and more equitable by retrofitting it to withstand earthquakes and by providing better connections for pedestrians, cyclists, Metro users, and motorists. The contractor, Alameda-based Stacy Witbeck. was selected for the project in late 2025. Work on the project began in February 2026.

A key logistical fix of the project involves realigning the I-5 Freeway northbound off-ramp so that cars will be able to turn directly southwest toward Silver Lake, thus eliminating the snaking “U-turn” many motorists currently make in Atwater at Glenhurst Avenue. Renovations will also include reparations and restorations of historic aesthetic features – as well as the creation of environmental upgrades, namely the addition of bicycle lanes and a bioremediation basin designed to filter water entering the river.

This post continues on the Ask Silver Lake section of our website and is linked in our bio.
