Twenty-five years ago today, the world witnessed one of history’s darkest days.
Nearly 3,000 people, including 24 Canadians, were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11. Thousands were wounded, and countless more have carried the pain of that day with them ever since.
We remember those who never came home – and the firefighters, first responders, and rescue and recovery workers who ran toward danger to save others.
In the hours that followed, Canada stood with our American neighbours without hesitation. When American skies closed, our government accepted 224 planes at 17 airports across Canada. Nearly 7,000 stranded passengers were welcomed by a small community in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The worst of times brought forth our better natures.
To serve one another – a neighbour, a stranger, a community in need – is the truest answer to those who would divide us. That is the spirit we mark today, on the National Day of Service.
Twenty-five years on, now and always, we will never forget.
