At the Center, cultural understanding plays a crucial role in the way we interact with our clients and volunteers. It not only helps us connect better with them, but it helps them connect better with us, and creates a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Los Angeles is home to more than 10 million residents, with 140 cultures, and as many as 224 languages. We’re proud to say that more than half of our staff speak a second language, including Armenian, Farsi, Russian, Spanish, and Tagalog.

The San Fernando Valley Business Journal honored the Center in 2022 and 2024 for our work related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The Center has been recognized by the Daily News Readers' Choice Awards with multiple distinctions for five years, including Best or Favorite Workplace for each of those years. The Center's commitment to cultural diversity was a significant factor leading to it being selected for these honors.

Commitment to cultural diversity is part of our mission and is supported at every level of our organization. The Center remains committed to equality for all and to taking specific and meaningful steps to do our part to increase diversity, equity and inclusion, allowing everyone in our community to thrive.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Begins Today

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

Hispanic/Latino Americans are the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S., with 62 million people representing nearly 19 percent of the total U.S. population. When many Hispanic and Latino citizens settle into American society, they often face difficulties due to systemic barriers and historical adversity.

A society's culture can impact whether or not you seek help, what type of help you seek and what support you have around you. Hispanic/Latino physical and mental health is shaped by several factors, including language and cultural barriers, lack of access to preventative care, and lack of health insurance. It is estimated that around 34% of Hispanic/Latino adults with mental illness receive treatment each year.

Finding ways to better understand these issues and best support Hispanic/Latino Americans is part of the Center's mission to provide effective and culturally sensitive therapeutic services based on each client's individualized needs, strengths and choices.

Cultural competence is critical. Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the United States. At the Center, 62% of staff identify as Hispanic or Latino and 86% speak Spanish. The Center was recognized in 2022 and 2024 for our efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Hispanic community has always embodied possibilities. It lives in the dreams of those who have only just arrived here and in the legacy of families who have been here for centuries. Please join the Center in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
