A message from President of the LA Commission on the Status of Women Jackie Filla:

"The Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women was established 47 years ago. This is the first time in our history that abortion rights may no longer be upheld by the Supreme Court. This draft decision flies in the face of precedent, common sense and women's freedom.

It cannot be forgotten that the women who will be most harmed by this decision are poor women, young women and women of color - all of whom deserve the right to shape their own lives.

We in the City of Los Angeles recognize that women's rights are human rights, and we remain committed to reproductive freedom and the right to safe medical procedures."

Congratulations Kristen Crowley, set to become LA's first female Fire Chief.

Today, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Council President Nury Martinez nominated Kristen Crowley, a longtime member of the Los Angeles Fire Department, to replace Chief Ralph Terrazas, who is retiring.

This makes Kristen Crowley the first woman to hold the post in the fire department's 136-year history.

As we heard today, every girl in Los Angeles can now know that she, too can serve as fire chief. Congratulations, Kristen!

Women have done so much during this pandemic, and suffered disproportionate economic pain - and yet, so many women in Los Angeles continue to serve their community.

Do you know an Angelena who has made a significant impact during COVID-19? Let us know for our Sheroes in the Time of COVID-19 Awards.

The LACSW will accept nominations thru the month of March from the community and recognize the stories of 20 Angelinas who have performed acts of kindness and worked tirelessly to help the City overcome COVID-19.
