Stable student housing is the foundation for opportunity, stability, and success.

Today, LACCD proudly convened community leaders, housing advocates, educators, and partners for an Action Summit focused on expanding housing opportunities for current and former foster youth. Together, we engaged in meaningful conversations, explored innovative solutions, and strengthened our collective commitment to ensuring that every student has a safe place to call home.

This work reflects our belief that student success does not begin and end in the classroom. When students have stable housing, they are better positioned to learn, persist, graduate, and achieve their dreams.

We'd like to thank LACCD Board President Sara Hernandez for her leadership and unwavering commitment to foster youth and the entire board for continuing to open pathways for success. This summit builds upon the District’s historic commitment and the Board resolution to reserve 20% of our emerging student housing program for current and former foster youth—an investment in equity, dignity, and the future of our students.

At LACCD, we are not just talking about solutions, we are building them. Together, we are creating pathways of hope and opportunity for some of our most resilient students.

There's still time to join LACCD this Thursday for Prioritizing Foster Youth in Student Housing: An Action Summit for LACCD and Partners.

This important convening will bring together education leaders, housing advocates, and community partners to advance strategies that expand housing opportunities for current and former foster youth. Together, we can help transform the foster care-to-homelessness pipeline into a foster care-to-prosperity pathway.

Meet Fritzi Velasquez, a Chemical Technology student at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Fritzi discovered LATTC’s Chemical Technology program while helping her younger brother enroll at the college and quickly found a community that supported her interests. Since starting, she has excelled in hands-on laboratory experiences, including analyzing the active ingredients in Excedrin Migraine medication and evaluating different measurement techniques to determine the most accurate and efficient methods.

Faculty members commend Fritzi for her strong work ethic, technical skills, and collaborative spirit. Her commitment to learning and helping her peers has earned her acceptance to CSU Long Beach, where she will transfer this fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Grateful for the opportunities she has found at LATTC, she continues to highlight the experiences of her classmates as well, demonstrating how community colleges can open doors to countless educational and career pathways.

Join us for: Prioritizing Foster Youth in Student Housing: An Action Summit for LACCD and Partners.

At this important event, LACCD and key community partners will engage in discussions to develop key strategies focused on student housing solutions for foster youth and help flip the pernicious foster care-to-homelessness pipeline into a foster care-to-prosperity pipeline.

This event builds on visionary work by the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees, who unanimously approved a resolution this spring to set aside 20% of its emerging student housing program for current and former foster youth. The Resolution, authored by Board President Sara Hernandez and co-sponsored by nearly the entire board, will help the District's 1,750 current and former foster youth get the housing they need to achieve their full academic potential.
