The California Film Commission was honored to receive the 2026 Global Production Award for Film Commission of the Year - State, Province and National during the Cannes Film Festival. This recognition reflects California’s continued leadership in global production and the collective effort to keep film and television production thriving in our State!

From the 2026 jury - “This winner shows structural policy reform, with immediate measurable effect, along with statewide coordination and crisis responsiveness. It is the clearest example of a commission reshaping competitive conditions and converting that into major projected impact.”

Director, Colleen Bell’s, acceptance speech- “ Big shoutout to my amazing team members here, Yetee Osunsanmi and Leah Medrano, all the members of our staff at the CA Film Commission. I think your description of what we’ve accomplished this past year said it all. It’s been a heavy lift for all of us. We’ve been so rooted in getting our incredible crews back to work, working in California, and we have a lot of momentum that has taken place because of that.

I’d like to thank Dee Dee Myers and Governor Gavin Newsom who have been incredibly supportive of us. California has always been a place, for 100 years, where dreams find a voice and together we will continue telling stories that will inspire the world and show what is possible.”

Here’s to California and to the extraordinary crews, creatives and communities that continue to power our state’s production engine!

The California Film Commission (CFC) holds monthly internal CFC Learns sessions - an opportunity for us to learn from advocates and organizations throughout the industry. Recently we were joined by Susan Sprung, CEO of the Producers Guild of America (PGA), and Malia Arrington and Lupe Arellanes from the Hollywood Commission.

Susan, Malia, and Lupe spoke to the CFC about resources available for independent productions looking to create a safer workplace and prevent harassment. These resources include The Hollywood Commission's Respect on Set, a first-of-its-kind, free online resource designed to help independent and low-budget film and television productions meet their anti-harassment responsibilities with confidence. The PGA also offers Set Etiquette Training to help independent producers establish clear standards of respect before cameras roll.

These resources provide guidance and best practices to help keep people safe and respected at work. The websites for Respect on Set and Set Etiquette Training are both listed on the Filmmaker & Production Resources table on our website.

🎬Featured California Location! 🎬

Bufford Ranch, Managed by Golden Ranch Estates
Bufford Ranch is a privately owned 900-acre working cattle ranch offering expansive, cinematic landscapes ideal for film and television productions. The property includes rolling hills, wide open grazing land, natural valleys, dirt roads, and undeveloped terrain that can double for a wide range of settings—from the American West to rural landscapes found across other parts of the country or even internationally.

📣 Press Release: Tax Credit Program 4.0 Approved Film Projects

SACRAMENTO - Today, Governor Newsom announced that 38 film projects have been awarded tax credits through the California Film Commission’s recently expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program. These productions, which will generate nearly $800 million in economic activity across California, are expected to spend more than 460 filming days outside the traditional 30-mile studio zone — bringing good-paying jobs and meaningful investment to communities statewide.

"This round marks a truly exciting milestone for our program. For the first time, we're welcoming animated feature films from powerhouses DreamWorks Animation, 20th Century Studios and Disney Entertainment Television, alongside a strong slate of big budget features and independent productions, that bring fresh voices and original storytelling to the screen. With more than 45% of filming days taking place outside the traditional studio zone, we're seeing the real-world economic impact of this program reach communities across the entire state. That's what this program is about: creating good-paying jobs and supporting local businesses, while bolstering California's creative economy in regions across the state." - Colleen Bell, Executive Director of the California Film Commission.
