ASCE Los Angeles Younger Members (LA YMF) American Society of Civil Engineers Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (ASCE LA YMF)

We are a group of younger members of the American Society of Civil Engineers who are highly involved in community and school outreach and grassroot advocacy for higher involvement of the public in infrastructure issues. A big part of our goals is to instruct the public what Civil Engineers do and encourage more students to pursuit careers in the technical fields.

We wrapped up Engineers Week with an amazing Girl Scouts Day at CSULA on Feb 21! 💛⚙️

Led by Lluvia Lopez Garces, civil engineering associate at LADWP, the event welcomed 50+ Girl Scouts, troop leaders, and parents from across Greater LA for a hands-on engineering experience.

The girls designed, built, and raced their own balloon-powered cars 🏎️💨 to see whose could go the farthest, earning their badges while learning about creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in engineering. They also toured CSULA’s engineering labs and met inspiring leaders in the field.

Huge thanks to Dean Nancy Warter-Perez, CSULA engineering faculty, ASCE student leaders Alan Dominguez & Lesly Avila, Girl Scouts leader Anna Leidelmeijer, and all the volunteers who made this event possible!

✨ See you next Engineers Week!

Continuing the excitement of ASCE LA YMF’s Engineer’s Week ⚙️🛠️, Girl Day was hosted on Thursday, February 19th, 2026 at LADWP’s John Ferraro Building.

Girl Day was led by Sophia Olmeda, a Civil Engineering Associate with LADWP who, with the help of a team of volunteers, welcomed about 100 students from Sacred Heart High School, GALA and GALS LA. The 7th-9th graders were greeted by Lluvia Lopez Garces, President of LADWP’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and a panel of well accomplished stars in engineering: Chloe Gharios - Civil Engineer with LADWP, Flor Hernandez - Civil Engineer with LADWP, and Kristy Hecht - Radio Frequency Engineer at Lockheed Martin. Students engaged with the panelists on topics such as work-life balance and projects they’ve worked on.

Students also participated in an essay contest prior to Girl Day, discussing engineering opportunities for the upcoming World Cup hosted in LA! Selected student essays were awarded 1st-4th place. 🏆

💧The highlight of the day was a water filtration contest where students played the role of an engineer, developing their scope of work, material selection, maintaining a budget, and executing their water filters. 💧

A huge thank you to the panelists, volunteers, schools, sponsors, and partners for promoting STEM to the rising generation of female engineers. Not only did students takeaway insight to careers in engineering and utilizing engineering principals, LADWP’s Society of Women Engineers provided swag bags for each student. 👷‍♀️💗

Our 13th Annual ASCE LA YMF E‑Week High School Day was a huge success! Led by Isabel Davila, Manufacturing Engineer at Eaton Aerospace Fluid Electronics Division, along with chairs Noe Mora USC Viterbi Service Learning Coordinator and Mitchell Kirby ASCE USC President, this year’s event took place at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering on February 20, 2026.

We were thrilled to welcome students from Sylmar Charter High School and Chatsworth Charter High School to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering for an inspiring day featuring a keynote by Dr. Darin Gray, an engaging panel discussion, a lively Kahoot quiz, and interactive hands‑on engineering activities.

A huge thank you to our keynote speaker, panelists, and our amazing USC partners — ASCE USC, Association of Energy Engineers, 3D4E, Colorstack, and ShiftSC — for sharing their passion and expertise.

And of course, we’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors, chairs, and volunteers whose dedication made this event possible. Together, we’re inspiring future innovators to transform their future through engineering! 🌎✨

ASCE LA YMF’s Engineers Week Middle School Day was led by Ani Sarkissian, Civil Engineering Associate from LADWP, held at La Kretz Innovation Campus on February 18, 2026.

We welcomed over 100 6th-8th grade students from Ernest Lawrence Middle School, Valor Academy Middle School, Sun Valley Magnet School, and Olive Vista Middle School, who had the opportunity to hear from guest speakers, take a tour of the La Kretz campus, and participate in hands-on activities with an engineering mindset! Students built water filtration systems and spaghetti towers, and were challenged to solve a problem with limited resources and time, brainstorming and collaborating to engineer a solution!
A shout out and thank you to our amazing speakers, Alice Han from LADWP, who talked about an engineers role in the upcoming LA28 Olympic Games, and Taleen Sarkissian from LADWP, who talked about ways to get involved in STEM and become an engineer one day! We are also very grateful to the La Kretz staff who provided informative and engaging tours of various sustainability initiatives LADWP is taking on! And this day would not be possible without the volunteers who also helped to inspire the next generation of engineers ⚙️💫

We are very grateful to CD 2, CD 7, and CD12 for their support, and to our generous sponsors who made this event possible:
⭐ Champion Sponsors: LA Bureau of Engineering (BOE) and LA Department of Water and Power (DWP)
⭐ Leader Sponsor: Bechtel
⭐ Advocate Sponsors: Parsons and HDR

Thank you to all of our volunteers, schools, sponsors, and partners for helping us inspire the future of engineering! 💙🏗️

What an incredible start to the 13th Annual Engineer’s Week! 🎉⚙️
Elementary School Day was proudly led by Isabella Salgado, Civil Engineering Associate from the LA Bureau of Engineering, who helped kick off ASCE LA YMF’s Engineer’s Week at LA City Hall on February 17, 2026.
We welcomed over 100 bright students from Chatsworth Park Elementary, Magnolia Elementary, Monte Vista Elementary, and Leo Politi Elementary for a day full of hands-on learning and inspiration.
Students stepped into the role of real engineers by designing and building marshmallow spaghetti towers using their own blueprints, thinking like designers and adapting like construction managers. They also had the unique opportunity to attend a City Council meeting and were officially welcomed to City Hall in celebration of Engineer’s Week.
A huge thank you to our inspiring speakers, Natalie Moore, Senior Civil Engineer from LA Bureau of Engineering, and Zeyad Hakam, West Region General Manager from Bechtel, for sharing their experiences and encouraging the next generation of engineers.
We are incredibly grateful to CD 1 and CD 12 for their support, and to our generous sponsors who made this event possible:
⭐ Champion Sponsors: LA Bureau of Engineering (BOE) and LA Department of Water and Power (DWP)
⭐ Leader Sponsor: Bechtel
⭐ Advocate Sponsors: Parsons and HDR
Thank you to all of our volunteers, schools, sponsors, and partners for helping us inspire the future of engineering! 💙🏗️
