Continuing the excitement of ASCE LA YMF’s Engineer’s Week ⚙️🛠️, Girl Day was hosted on Thursday, February 19th, 2026 at LADWP’s John Ferraro Building.
Girl Day was led by Sophia Olmeda, a Civil Engineering Associate with LADWP who, with the help of a team of volunteers, welcomed about 100 students from Sacred Heart High School, GALA and GALS LA. The 7th-9th graders were greeted by Lluvia Lopez Garces, President of LADWP’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and a panel of well accomplished stars in engineering: Chloe Gharios - Civil Engineer with LADWP, Flor Hernandez - Civil Engineer with LADWP, and Kristy Hecht - Radio Frequency Engineer at Lockheed Martin. Students engaged with the panelists on topics such as work-life balance and projects they’ve worked on.
Students also participated in an essay contest prior to Girl Day, discussing engineering opportunities for the upcoming World Cup hosted in LA! Selected student essays were awarded 1st-4th place. 🏆
💧The highlight of the day was a water filtration contest where students played the role of an engineer, developing their scope of work, material selection, maintaining a budget, and executing their water filters. 💧
A huge thank you to the panelists, volunteers, schools, sponsors, and partners for promoting STEM to the rising generation of female engineers. Not only did students takeaway insight to careers in engineering and utilizing engineering principals, LADWP’s Society of Women Engineers provided swag bags for each student. 👷♀️💗
