The Ebell of Los Angeles is a nonprofit organization founded in 1894 by a small group of bold women to educate and uplift women. Our mission has evolved to advancing ALL Angelenos through education, arts and culture, and philanthropy. Throughout the year we present public programs at our historic campus and theatre featuring artists, athletes, scholars, scientists, business innovators and politic

al leaders. We partner with other community organizations, and through all our projects our members still work to inspire and empower women, perhaps most notably through more than 100 years of awarding scholarships to students and providing grants to charities that help at-risk women and children in the Los Angeles community. Our motto is, “I will find a way, or make one.”

Today, we remember the fearless Gloria Steinem.

Her voice and vision transformed the possibilities available to generations of women. As a writer and trailblazer, she challenged assumptions about what women could do, be, or become. By bringing women's experiences to the center of public conversation, she inspired countless others to speak up as well and push for a more equitable future for all.

Her legacy lives on in every woman who uses her voice to make change, and in every generation dreaming of a brighter tomorrow.

At the Ebell, we know firsthand the power of women gathering and raising their voices. We honor Gloria for helping generations of women do just that, and we will continue to carry that torch for her and for all women.

This event was planned and curated by us, The Ebell’s high school interns, in collaboration with Ebell staff through the Bloomberg Arts Internship, and it marks the culmination of our summer internship. We can’t wait to share everything we’ve worked so hard to create!

This summer, high school interns from the LA County Bloomberg Arts Internship Program (Bloomberg Philanthropies + LA County Dept. of Arts and Culture) have been on our historic campus curating, producing, and building an entire show.

On August 5, they present the result: the first-ever Teen Symposium & Showcase — a teen-built capstone modeled on The Ebell Institute (TEI), our annual platform for the women shaping LA’s culture and civic life. Visual art, performance, photography, and presentations answering one question: How have women — and those expanding what womanhood means — shaped the past, present, or future of Los Angeles?

She Didn’t Just Break Barriers. She Expanded Horizons.
Before “STEM” had a name, Amelia Earhart showed women that curiosity and courage could change the world.

In April 1937, Amelia took the stage at The Ebell of Los Angeles, where women gathered to explore the ideas and innovations shaping the future.

Today, on Amelia’s birthday, we celebrate not only an aviation pioneer, but a woman who reminded us to dream bigger, aim higher, and never let others define our limits.
Happy Birthday, Amelia. Here’s to every woman bold enough to reach for new horizons.

She Didn’t Wait for Permission.
Some people inherit the future.
Others build it.

Long before women could vote, Harriet Williams Russell Strong was already doing both. Inventor. Water conservation pioneer. Suffragist. Arts patron. Champion for women’s education and opportunity. Her bold ideas helped shape modern California and earned her a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

In 1894, she became the founding president of The Ebell of Los Angeles, believing that when women learn, lead, and support one another, communities thrive.
Her greatest legacy wasn’t simply what she built—it was what she made possible for others.

Today, as we celebrate Harriet’s birthday and prepare for the Centennial of The Ebell’s historic Wilshire Boulevard campus, we’re reminded that one person with vision and courage really can change a city.

Happy Birthday, Harriet. May we all have the courage to build a better future.

Come spend a day with us, Hannah and Elva, The Ebell’s high school summer interns! Today, we were selecting pieces for our upcoming Teen TEI Symposium & Showcase on August 5 at 7:00 pm.

The showcase will feature paintings, photography, dance, music videos, poetry, and more created by talented Los Angeles teens. Each selected piece responds to the question: How have women—and those expanding what womanhood means—shaped the past, present, or future of Los Angeles? We’d love for you to join us!
