For Kyle, losing a job meant more than losing a paycheck. It meant rethinking every grocery trip while his family adjusted to living on one income.

That’s where food assistance has helped. At a recent distribution at Adventures to Dreams Enrichment, Kyle was especially excited to find applesauce, something his kids had been asking for that simply hadn’t fit into the family’s budget.

“I just know that my kids are going to get really excited when they see it,” he shared.

As grocery prices continue to rise, making a fixed income stretch far enough can be a challenge.

For Elena, visiting a free food distribution at Adventures to Dreams Enrichment Long Beach helps her fill the gaps in her grocery budget and provide nutritious meals for her daughter.

“I’m very thankful, it really helps us out,” Elena shared. “We’re able to eat every day if we can.”

This month, during the August Congressional Recess, the Food Bank was honored to host visits with Members of Congress and policy staff from the Los Angeles Congressional delegation to highlight the work of the Food Bank and our agency partners.

Our CEO, Michael Flood, and our Government Affairs team helped lead visits and meetings across Los Angeles County, including a visit with Rep. Judy Chu to Foothill Unity Center's food distribution in Pasadena; a visit with Congresswoman Luz Rivas to North Valley Caring Services' food distribution in North Hills; a meeting with Rep. Linda Sánchez at her district office in Whittier; a visit to our agency partner The Salvation Army Southern California in Harbor City with Elizabeth Smith from the Office of Rep. Nanette Barragán; and a tour of the Food Bank’s City of Industry facility with Jake Bentham from the Office of Senator Alex Padilla.

These tours and meetings highlighted the critical importance of federal nutrition programs, including CalFresh, TEFAP, and CSFP, and the impacts of H.R. 1 on CalFresh in California. Our team asked Members of Congress and policy staff to continue supporting federal nutrition programs that help neighbors facing food insecurity in Los Angeles County while also supporting U.S. farmers and producers who supply food through USDA commodity programs.

“BEST if Used by” and “USE by.” What’s the difference?

A new California law is making food date labels easier to understand.

As of July 1, 2026, AB 660 standardizes date labels on newly manufactured packaged foods, helping shoppers better understand when a date refers to peak quality versus food safety.

That clarity could also help keep perfectly good food from going to waste and help more nutritious food reach neighbors who need it.

From receiving groceries with her mom to becoming a familiar face welcoming neighbors, Maria’s story is a powerful example of community in action.

After attending a monthly Los Angeles Regional Food Bank distribution at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Maria decided she wanted to give back. What started with handing out flyers grew into helping with registration, greeting neighbors and building friendships along the way.

Today, community members look forward to seeing Maria and the smile she brings to every distribution.
