Today we join the nation in honoring the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who died while serving our country throughout history. Their immense sacrifices at home and abroad remind us that freedom is not free and that, year-round, service members stand on the front lines preserving our safety and the ideals our country holds dear. May we never forget their courage or the debt of gratitude we owe them.

The L.A. City Council approved a $15 billion budget for 2026–27 on Thursday, preserving Mayor Karen Bass’ police hiring plan while setting aside additional funding for potential emergencies. The budget paves the way for the hiring of 510 police officers, leaving the LAPD with 8,555 officers by summer 2027.

City Councilmember Traci Park cast the lone opposing vote, saying the plan shortchanges the fire department and cuts the number of homeless encampment cleanups in her coastal district.

May is a significant month for the law enforcement profession. We honor, remember and reflect on the service and sacrifice of our fallen brothers and sisters during local and national peace officer memorial ceremonies, while also recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month by emphasizing the importance of first responders’ mental, physical and emotional well-being. It is a time to show up for one another, understand how mental health impacts everyone in our communities, break the stigma of asking for help, and offer support to the loved ones and colleagues who need it. In a ruling that warrants attention from California peace officers and the unions that represent them, the Court of Appeal in Schneider v. Superior Court expanded Pitchess disclosure requirements, holding that prosecutors must now turn over underlying personnel records, not just witness names and contact information, when Brady material is identified. The decision raises concerns about officer privacy, safety and the potential public release of sensitive information. Learn more at the link below.

May is National Military Appreciation Month, designated by Congress in 1999 to honor the contributions of armed forces members, veterans and the families who support them. This observance recognizes those who have served, past and present, and the military communities that make their service possible. This month and every month, we are grateful for their sacrifice in preserving the many freedoms we enjoy.
