The LA Civil Rights Department and our Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) honor the monumental life and legacy of Gloria Steinem, who passed away at age 92.

​Gloria Steinem’s movement-building—from launching Ms. Magazine and helping to establish Take Our Daughters to Work Day to hosting thousands of community Talking Circles—reflects the core vision of CSW.

​Gloria Steinem showed us how empathy and active listening is where lasting progress begins. CSW and the LA Civil Rights Department remain dedicated to making sure every voice in our city is heard, valued, and empowered.

Los Angeles is proud to be home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the world, and we stand firmly against the unacceptable targeting our neighbors continue to face.

To address these critical issues, the LA Civil Rights Department (LACR) and Councilmember Adrin Nazarian recently co-hosted “The Cost of Hate: How Public Speech and Online Content Impact Our Communities.” Moderated by LACR Executive Director Capri Maddox, this vital panel documented the real-world costs of discrimination. From local businesses losing customers to neighbors feeling unsafe, hate impacts us all.

We honor the 19th Amendment while confronting the ongoing threat to voting rights. With federal measures like the SAVE Act and California’s Prop 39, women, communities of color, and immigrant workers still face a disproportionate impact on their rights. The Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) works to bridge the gap between the promise of equality and the daily realities faced by LA’s diverse communities.

CSW and the LA Civil Rights Department's landmark menopause workplace motion and anti-trafficking efforts leading up to the 2028 Olympics demonstrate our dedication to dismantling systemic barriers, not just treating symptoms. Cities across Los Angeles County are responding to rapidly changing challenges affecting immigrant residents, families, and the broader community.

The LA Civil Rights Department participated in the Los Angeles County Regional City Summit. The summit brought together local government leaders and regional partners to strengthen collaboration across Los Angeles County. The summit provided an opportunity to share resources and strategies for supporting immigrant residents and families as community needs and policies continue to shift.

This summer was a party in the USA! With FIFA World Cup games played across North America, Los Angeles was a proud host city. The LA Civil Rights Department staff supported “Kick It in The Park,” a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, LA Council Districts, and LA Recreation and Parks, to ensure the World Cup reached every corner of the city. At these vibrant gathering spaces and watch parties, we were happy to provide information about community resources and neighborhood programming.

Executive Director Capri Maddox, Esq., was honored to support a deeply moving celebration at Loyola Law School Los Angeles, graciously hosted by Dean Brietta Clark, Branch Cinema, and Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. This event recognized legendary Attorney Alfred "Al" Jenkins for an extraordinary 50 years of tireless tutoring, mentorship, and selfless public service.

The centerpiece of the event was Bar Daddy: The Al Jenkins Story, a powerful documentary capturing Mr. Jenkins’ extraordinary legacy, providing free California Bar Exam prep to over 3,000 Black law graduates! Capri joined Judge Kevin Ross, Fre'Drisha Dixon, Esq., and Deputy District Attorney Robert "Bobby" Grace in offering personal, heartfelt testimonials expressing profound gratitude for his guidance and celebrating the immense impact he has made on their lives and careers.

At the LA Civil Rights Department, leveling the playing field starts with investing in our youth and uplifting the next generation of community advocates. Executive Director Capri Maddox recently had the privilege of spending a morning with young scholars at Community Coalition's Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School.

The atmosphere was vibrant with music, dance, and a shared dedication to youth leadership. Stepping into the scholars' reading circle, Capri shared an inspirational story and engaged in a heart-to-heart discussion about leadership and identity. Students eagerly asked about her personal inspirations growing up and what fuels her passion to serve Los Angeles today.

The LA Civil Rights Department has officially distributed more than half of the $8.5 million dollars in L.A. REPAIR funding across LA! Most recently, we were pleased to present a $315,772 ceremonial check to El Nido in the Arleta-Pacoima neighborhood which will expand essential health, wellness, and youth programs through its newly funded Nurturing Health in Arleta/Pacoima project. El Nido Family Centers will serve more than 1,500 residents of Arleta and Pacoima by expanding the El Nido Farmers Market, offering free gardening, yoga, and Zumba classes, increasing access to healthy food, and hosting a number of community events and health and wellness activities for families in Arleta.
