The Los Angeles City Park Rangers love our horses and Mounted Unit. Our Mounted Unit feeds and maintains our horses. They definitely try to make it out to special events and our Jr. Ranger Programs. If you see them in the park, feel free to say hi.

On 04/02/24 at approximately 1110 hrs, Park Rangers received a report of an overturned vehicle on Mt. Lee Dr. near the Mt. Lee Radio Tower. Additional reports indicated that the vehicle may be teetering on the roads edge which initiated a large response from air and ground resources. Upon arrival, Park Rangers found a vehicle resting partially up the embankment on the side of the roadway, away from the cliff edge. The vehicle had two occupants, who were able to self extricate from the vehicle and were being attended to by LAPD Officers stationed at the radio facility. The occupants were assessed by Park Rangers and LAFD paramedics upon arrival and found to be uninjured. LAPD and Park Rangers facilitated removal of the vehicle from the mountain road.

Jose “Joe” Pineda started his career with the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks in 1990 after serving 8 years in the United States Air Force.

He worked as a Park Patrol Officer until 1994, when he graduated from the Rio Hondo Police Academy and obtained the position of Full-Time Park Ranger. Joe provided safety and quality service during his time with the Park Rangers, making a lot of friends throughout his career.

In 2014, Joe was promoted to Sr. Park Ranger and continued to serve the community in that capacity until his retirement in 2022.

Rest in peace Retired Sgt. Jose “Joe” Pineda. Your service will never be forgotten.

The LA City Park Rangers recently held a refresher training at Griffith Park for Rope Rescue Systems. Rangers frequently respond to “Hiker Rescue” incidents in which individuals might find themselves injured while hiking and sometimes stuck “off-trail”. Simulated rescues help us remain fresh on our skills to better serve the visitors to our City’s parks and open spaces. Remember to plan ahead, come prepared, and stay on the trail.

On January 26th at approximately 5:30pm, a mother and her daughter were hiking with their 1 yr old pitbull mix near the Old Zoo when their dog slipped away from them off into the brush. The mother and daughter stayed looking for their dog, Copper, and last saw him around 9pm on Vista Del Valle trail near Bee Rock. Park Rangers and the owner were unable to locate Copper.

The owners never gave up and found their dog near the fenced area by Bee Rock on February 3rd around 4:30pm. Park Ranger Cruz arrived to assist with carrying the dog back to their owner from the hillside.

The Park Rangers are happy the owners were able to be reunited with their dog.
