Little Free Anti-Racism Library

Little Free Anti-Racism Library Anti-racism understands racism as not only beliefs held by individuals but structures in society.

Anti-racism is a practice built around understanding racism as not only a set of beliefs held by individuals, but as the systems built by, and reinforcing, those beliefs. This Little Free Library's mission is to help the Westchester community learn more about these systems and these structures that harm our neighbors. This library is a project of https://www.facebook.com/juniorbird/

I can’t believe it’s November already! This month we’re celebrating:
- Native American Heritage Month. This LFL is on historically Chumash and Tongva (Gabrileno) land. While a land acknowledgment can be an empty gesture, I believe it’s important to understand the historic actions that led to the depopulation of native societies as European settlers pushed into their lands. In our case, the Mission system offered some advantages, but ultimately led to the destruction of the existing indigenous society and its agricultural activities.
- Homeless Children Awareness Month. Here in Westchester, we’re struggling with an increase in our homeless population, and what to do for them. While our City Councilperson advocates mostly carceral solutions, it would serve us all to see the humanity in those around us - especially the less fortunate. The unhoused are people like us, with all of the rights that implies.
- As the conflict continues to roil in Gaza, we must remember that everyone there is a person just like the rest of us - the murdered Jews, the Palestinian victims of Israeli bombings, even the militants who carried out unspeakable acts. Peace comes through understanding, not dehumanization.

Like many folks, I am heartbroken by the violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip. My mother’s family fled the Pale of Settlement, ahead of pogroms, at the beginning of the 20th Century; none of the relatives who didn’t emigrate survived the Holocaust. So I have a lot of sympathy for Israel and what Israelis are going through and fighting against.

Yet I also know that the Palestinians’ lot is not a happy one. Defeated, displaced, exploited by their neighbors… it is an awful situation.

The root of genocide is dehumanization. Whatever side we are on, we must not forget that those we think of as the other or the enemy are people too, in most ways just like us. So I’ll be putting out books by Israeli and Palestinian authors. Please read and learn and, hopefully, find love in your heart for those different than you.
